There was a clash between the police and locals who came to stop smuggling in Rajgarh Rural Municipality-2 Kamalpur of Saptari on Tuesday night. The situation became tense when some locals started pelting stones at the police who were deployed on the basis of a tip-off that smuggling was going on in the middle of the night.

At the same time, 36-year-old Lalu Yadav, a local resident, was shot dead by the police. Yadav, who was injured by a bullet, was brought to Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital Rajviraj for treatment. He died during the treatment.

DSP Jitendra Kumar Basnet, the spokesperson of the district police office, said that a few rounds of fire were fired to control the situation and Yadav died during treatment after being shot in the thigh.

According to him, a policeman was also injured in the clash. After the clash, some cartons of liquor, which were to be smuggled to India, were also seized.
