Skanda Swaran, the founder of Dhumbarahi Children's Library, said that when children mingle with people from different backgrounds from an early age, it eliminates discrimination.
She said this in the fifth edition of 'Nirvik Nari' program organized by Nari Masik, a co-publication of Kantipur Media Group.
She has been conducting open Pustakalai for children in Dhumbarahi for two years. "In my library, children come from different backgrounds, from both government and private schools," she said in the second session, "Adolescent Matters". I think, when you learn to include everyone from a young age, you neither discriminate others . You face discrimination yourself . Which is a very good thing .'
She is studying A Levels at St Xavier . She started an open library for children after she had a reading habit and piled up books at home. She said that children can have interactive activities where they can read, exchange the books they have read and even donate.
'We started this library with the idea of doing good with some fun . It inspires all children to read," she says. "Every Saturday morning from 9 to 10 am, about 30 to 40 children come to our library . Which is a very good thing.
In her library, children are not pressured to read and they are also made to participate in interactive activities, she said.
