In the last 10 years, there have been 833 earthquakes in Nepal. In the year 2072, after the powerful earthquake of 7.6 magnitude with Barpak in Gorkha as its epicenter, these earthquakes have occurred in small and big forms.

According to the data of the National Earthquake Measurement Center, districts around Kathmandu have been affected the most by these earthquakes. Then Doti, Achham, Bajhang and Bajura hilly districts of Far West. have been affected .

In this period, the district with the most earthquakes is Dolakha, where in 10 years there have been 191 earthquakes with small and large aftershocks. Similarly, there have been 103 earthquakes in Sindhupalchowk, 55 in Dhading, 51 in Bajhang, 40 in Gorkha, 38 in Nuwakot, 30 in Bajura, 29 in Rasuwa and 20 times in Taplejung.

West Nepal at high risk

Nepal is at high risk of earthquakes due to the friction between the Indian and Tibetan plates. Chintan Timilsina, a seismologist at the Surkhet branch of the National Earthquake Measurement Center, says that even in Nepal, western Nepal is at greater risk. According to him, hilly districts are at a higher risk of earthquakes than remote Terai. He claims that since 500 years have passed since the accumulation of great seismic force under the geography of western Nepal, an earthquake can occur at any time.

For the past few years, small and medium-sized earthquakes have been hitting West Nepal continuously. Last year, a moderate earthquake of 6.4 magnitude in Jajarkot caused a huge loss of life. Before and after that, there are frequent earthquakes in remote places such as Bajhang, Bajura, Doti and causing loss of people's wealth.

079 Magh 10th, an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 occurred with Bichya as its epicenter. The earthquake was followed by seven aftershocks above magnitude 4. Similarly, there was an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 on 14 Baisakh 080. On October 22, 2007, 6 people died and 5 others were injured in an earthquake in East Chowki Rural Municipality-3 of Doti, Doti.

Seismologist Chintan Timilsina says that although the risk of earthquakes cannot be reduced, the damage can be reduced by making earthquake-resistant structures. He said that earthquakes can occur in western Nepal at any time and therefore disaster preparedness should be done.
