Rajkumar Nagarkoti of Lele, Godavari Municipality-6, Lalitpur, built a two-storied concrete house only last Baisakh. On Saturday, the flood in the Nallu river washed away that new house. Farmland has turned into a bog. Now 8 other members of the family are taking shelter in the house of relatives.
Lele's Bhola Pahri's house has also been swept away by the flood, there is no sign of farmland. Along with his wife and two children, he has also taken care of his relatives. The pain of Rajesh Nagarkoti is also the same. The flood of Nallu has washed away Annapat, Pashuchaupaya along with the house. "Now how to build a house, how to live!" He sighed.
Floods caused by heavy rains last Friday and Saturday have caused the highest human losses in Lalitpur among the three districts of the valley. 45 people lost their lives in Lalitpur, 6 people are still missing. 17 people died in Kathmandu district and 5 people died in Bhaktapur.
According to the District Administration Office, 2,751 people have been affected by the floods in Lalitpur. Out of 1 thousand 93 people who were rescued, 3 people are being treated at Patan Hospital. Floods swept away one and a half dozen houses in Lele-Nallu-Tikabhairav area. Two people have died due to a landslide in Lele.
Dozens of houses have been damaged after the flood of Nallu mixed with Nakhkhu. "Stone mining and crusher industries are the cause of the devastating floods," said Ram Prasad Bajgain of Tika Bhairav. According to him, such industries used to extract stones and sand randomly. The local government and police-administration were not interested in natural exploitation by cutting down the forest and felling the hills. "Landslides occurred because the mountains were randomly dug up, after the landslides entered the river, there was a flood, the destruction caused by the flood is the destruction, now we have been hit by the same destruction," Bajgain said.
In the past, initiatives were also taken by the people to stop the mining that is being done by destroying the community and national forests of Tikabhairav, Lele, Devichaur and other areas. 15 years ago, the Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament directed the government to stop illegal mining after the news came out. But the directives of the Parliamentary Committee and the demands of the locals were ignored by the government machinery. Sanchamaya Nagarkoti of Lele-Nallu area said that one of her cows was washed away by the flood from the mining area and 5 cows were killed. Locals say that the reason is that there is no mining industry.
Local residents complain that the government is still not present in the flood-affected areas of Lele-Nallu-Tikabhairava region. However, Chief District Officer of Lalitpur, Tulsi Bahadur Shrestha, said that they are managing the shelter and relief for the dead/displaced/affected in coordination with the local level.
'Based on the demand of the municipality, we are providing materials such as tripal, blankets, mats,' he said. Prazia Shrestha also informed that an awareness program has been run up to the ward level in coordination with the local level through the District Public Health Office to prevent further problems such as epidemics in the areas affected by floods and landslides. "Medicine and treatment arrangements have been arranged according to need," he said.
