The United States has said that it hopes that the government of Nepal and the people of Nepal will have a meaningful dialogue to ensure good governance, freedom of the press and fundamental rights of the people. The American Embassy in Kathmandu issued a statement in favor of press freedom on the day (Wednesday) after the government arrested Kailash Sirohia, president of Kantipur Media Group, in retaliation for writing news.

The embassy said press freedom, accountability and transparency are the guiding principles for America as it continues its efforts towards becoming a 'more perfect country' through social media. "As Nepal continues to shape the democracy achieved after a difficult struggle, we hope that the government of Nepal and the people of Nepal will have a meaningful dialogue about ensuring good governance, freedom of the press and fundamental rights of the people," the embassy said.

International Press Institute (IPI) Nepal Chapter has expressed deep concern over the arrest of President Sirohia. General Secretary Shiromani Dhungana has issued a statement on Wednesday and said that the arrest of President Sirohia from the working room while Kantipur was publishing/broadcasting the issue of misappropriation of funds of the cooperative has given rise to the suspicion of political revenge. The time at which Sirohia has been arrested has raised questions about the attitude of the government. There are places where it can be suspected that this step is not taken for political revenge," the statement said. 

The IPI Nepal Chapter strongly believes that actions directed by retaliation and abuse of state power are against the universal recognition of freedom of press and expression. The chapter has also requested the government not to do this type of activity and to create an environment where the media world can work without fear.
