Nepali Congress youth candidate Yogesh Gauchan Thakali has been elected as a member of the House of Representatives from the Himalayan district of Mustang. Gauchan, 29, won by a wide margin, beating his nearest rival Indradhara Bista of the UML.
According to the final results released, Gauchan won by securing 3,307 votes. His nearest rival Bista of the CPN (UML) secured only 1,806 votes. Gauchan defeated Bista by a huge margin of 1,501 votes. Gauchan was the youngest member of the dissolved House of Representatives.
Yogesh Gauchan Thakali is the son of influential Nepali Congress leader and former minister Romi Gauchan Thakali. Romi Gauchan, who dominated Mustang politics for a long time, stepped aside and fielded his son Yogesh in the election fray. Unmarried Yogesh, who entered politics with the challenge of carrying on his father's political legacy, has achieved his second consecutive success.
