Actor Mahesh Tripathi's number of feature films is less. But in as many movies as he has acted, his character has definitely left a distinct impression. As recently two films in which he has important roles are 'Pheri Resham Philili' and 'Laaz Sharanam'.

Although the film received mixed reviews, Mahesh's performance was highly praised. He won the best actor award at the prestigious Houston Film Festival in America from the film Halkara in which Mahesh played the lead role. An edited part of the conversation with Mahesh for Ekantipur's regular column Five Questions is presented here .

Films that have had a lasting impact on you ?

The Iranian film that has influenced me for a long time is 'The Father'. It is directed by Majid Majidi. While watching this film, I kept thinking that cinema also tells such a story. The day I saw this movie . Then watch movies from other countries  The way is also opened . This movie broadened my view of cinema.

What is your favorite Nepali film?

My favorite Nepali films include Numafung, Dying Candle, Sanghuro, Bulbul, White Sun and many others. How many good films are missed and injustice is done while taking names like this . There are very few good films in Nepal. If the names of those good films are missed, it will be a pity . Because of that, there are as many films as you can count in Nepal and all of them are loved.

My first favorite is Numafung . Because this film is a film shot in the 50s . At that time, Nepali movies were one of a kind. But it created such a different story in the Nepali film industry. This film changed the definition of Nepali film. Because of that, it left a deep impression on my psyche that the story of the cinema could be like this. The movies named

have also created a distinct image in the Nepali film industry . Due to the style of telling the story, the approach of the maker, the movies remain in my mind.

What is your favorite foreign film?

The first foreign film I watched was a Hollywood film . Actor Tom Hanks is more than the cinema that influences me in English films . Then when I started exploring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino and others are the actors . Then I like Iranian films.

The positive and improving aspects of Nepali films?

Nepali cinema is doing well now. If you look at it this way, it is going in a positive way . I think we should create our own identity in our cinema . If we create our unique identity through cinema, our cinema can be strong globally, no matter how weak it is technically. Like watching Iranian movies. Technically not much explored . But the movies there are appreciated all over the world . We watch a lot of Korean dramas. It is because it is strong in itself. Watching South Cinema . It is because of its own identity . Since our cinema also got its own identity, it used to be a mess .

Recommend movies and books to the new generation ?

The medium that makes this world easy to observe is the book. The book introduces us to the life of different places . The book seems to be a very powerful weapon. I want to tell you to read as you like but read the book. I also want to keep reading . I highly recommend the book for upcoming actors to read . As for cinema, we should watch global cinemas. Not only watching cinema, but also understanding its history . Which way is the cinema, where the cinema also has its own history . From what situation have those movies come to this state? Our Nepali cinema should also watch global cinema to get a clear roadmap of where it will go.
