Due to incessant rains, around 1,200 megawatts of electricity generated by various projects across the country has been stopped. According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, the power generation of various projects in Likhu, Solu, Kosi, Kabeli, Tamor Corridor has been stopped.
Chandan Kumar Ghosh, spokesperson of the authority, said that due to the transmission line, electricity production of Likhu 1, Likhu 2, Likhu A, Lower Likhu, Khimti and Upper Khimti hydropower projects has stopped.
Due to the landslides, the electricity production of hydropower projects including Mandu Hydropower, Upper Tamakoshi, Middle Solu, Beni Solu, Solu Dudhkoshi, Upper Dudhkund and Middle Tamor has also stopped.
The structure (headworks) of the dam area of the 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project has been damaged.
According to the authority, power generation was stopped from 7 pm on Friday after the water flow was high in Upper Tamakoshi located in Bigu rural municipality-1 Lamabagar of Dolakha. After the river crossed the surface level, Ghosh, the authority's spokesperson, informed that many power generation was stopped. According to him, the upper Tamakosi and Mandu hydropower have been damaged.
Balram Khatiwada, Secretary General of Independent Power Producers Association (IPPAN), says that the process of closing the power houses of hydropower projects across the country continues after the flood. He said that Mandu Hydropower, Lower Hewa River and Upper Tamakoshi were damaged by the flood.
In hydropower projects, he informed that even though there were general details about poles falling down, there were no details of major damage. According to IPPAAN, the power house of Mandu Hydropower was submerged when the flood occurred in Wagmati river and Kulekhani dam was opened. Generally, 2800 megawatts of electricity was produced. Now, 1200 megawatts of electricity generation has been disrupted.
According to Ghosh, the authority's spokesperson, the collapse of tower number 51 between Damak and Godak in Ilam has caused an indefinite power outage in Ilam, Panchthar, Fidim and Taplejung areas. Ghosh said that electricity can be supplied only if local hydropower projects generate electricity and distribute it to the local people. Similarly, Ghosh says that the lines of Radio Nepal, Satdaebate, Khaekna and Bhaktapur in some places in the valley are not working.
