The old clothes that have been sorted to be thrown in the garbage collection vehicles are now collected by the 'Hamro Zayshana Group' located in Parvatitoll, Pokhara Metropolitan City-9. This group prepares new materials by reusing and reproducing old clothes. 11 women have been assigned to prepare those materials.
With the help of the Green Job Creation Project (GCRU) conducted by the Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality with the support of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the group has established a domestic industry that recycles old clothes. group, Lekhmaya Thapa, the members of the group go to villages and neighborhoods and collect old and wasted clothes. Among them, disposable clothing is separated. Strong fabric is used in new products like bags, purses . Good clothes are washed and sold again. In the group, 11 people have been employed in washing clothes, sorting, cutting, sewing, designing, ironing etc. . The
project provided materials such as electric sewing machines, washing machines, boots, hats, and masks to be used when separating garbage. is . "Earlier, I used to spend my time at home looking at my mobile phone," President Thapa said, "Now I have money to eat vegetables." To earn a living, we are working in the free time after the children go to school. Under the
project, one hundred people have been employed in the Women's Skills Development Institute in Pokhara-8 Simalchaur. They have found employment in the organization's own factory by reusing waste plastic, sacks, cloth, thread and making handicrafts. According to the chief executive officer of the organization, Ramkali Khadka, the women of ward number 8, 14 and 16 have been trained and given employment in the organization. "Creating jobs through waste management is important for Pokhara," she said.
For the past 12 years, Himalaya Life Plastics Pvt. Ltd., operating in Pokhara industrial area, has been collecting plastic bottles, processing them and selling them into pellets. After providing machinery support to the project since last year, Pvt Ltd is currently collecting and reusing plastic bottles. Prakash Bharti, the chief executive officer of the company, is currently producing materials such as keyrings, pats, clutches, etc. from plastic bottles. 5 more people have been employed in this work .
In Pokhara-2 Archalboat, a women's group has operated a glass pen making industry from old newspapers. After the project supported the machine and training for making pencils from magazines, 5 people are currently self-employed in the Pokhreli pencil group. Shanti Adhikari, the owner of Pokhreli Sisakalam, said that she has been operating the industry of making Sisakalam from newspapers because it is related to waste management and job creation and is also environmentally friendly.

Currently, the garbage produced daily in the metropolis is being disposed of at the temporary landfill site of Pokhara-32. Pokhara-33 Baghmara is said to make a permanent landfill site, but it has not yet started . City chief Acharya said that the company is in the final stage of selection to build a permanent landfill site in the model of extracting gas or electricity from waste.
This project of Koika, UNDP and Pokhara metropolis, which will end in December 2029, is expected to make a significant contribution in the field of green employment. The target is to create 680 green jobs in the selected communities. In addition, there is a plan to create 300 more jobs through recycling and upcycling enterprises. In this way, a total of 980 people will be directly provided employment opportunities. The
project has given special priority to capacity building. 811 officers and other stakeholders of the Metropolitan Municipality will receive training and education on effective waste management. This project will provide training and tools for effective waste management to 8,160 households in selected communities.
Entrepreneurship and skill training related to recycling and upcycling will be provided to 1,360 people from selected communities in the field of entrepreneurship development. Also, this project will provide equipment and technology support to 136 recycling and upcycling groups.
The Pokhara Metropolitan Municipality has provided the necessary land in the exhibition center for the Green Venture Zone. The construction of the new style building and its master plan was done by the development project itself. The construction of the building has already started. Incubation, marketing and public awareness activities will be conducted in this zone. The products of entrepreneurs who have received support under the project will be kept for sale as koseli houses. The project plans to establish or strengthen 30 recycling and upcycling enterprises and support them through an incubation program.
This project will also give suggestions on waste management policy, strategy, law creation and amendment of Pokhara metropolis. For that, the Waste Management Coordinating Committee will become active and recommend 15 legal provisions related to waste management and submit them to the Metropolitan Executive for implementation. The goal of the project is to develop and implement data tracking tools in waste management.
'Its characteristic is to give practical form to the concept of converting waste into value,' the city chief Acharya said, 'the project will not only create jobs but also contribute significantly to environmental protection and social sustainability.' He says that this project based on the circular economy model will play an important role in developing Pokhara as a clean and green city. People's representatives and technical staff of the metropolis also visited Korea to observe this model being practiced in Korea.
