”I'm just trying to make ends meet by pounding gravel, the shop is just for forgetting.”

'I set up a shop because I was only working as a stone crusher and when there was no work, I would wander around the village and get lost. What can I call a shop? It's just a way to forget. If you add up all the goods in the shop, it probably won't be worth two thousand rupees!'

”I'm just trying to make ends meet by pounding gravel, the shop is just for forgetting.”

What you should know

I have built a house with the money I saved up in India and the money I saved after cutting down on household expenses, and with a loan of two lakh rupees. Ironically, that same house is now being pulled down by a landslide. I can't sleep at night thinking about the condition of the house. I can't save the house that has started to collapse. I understand that suffering will not leave us as long as people are alive.

I am now 57 years old. My house is in Resunga Municipality-12, Kabrarukh. I have now built a house in Haredanda. I live alone at home. My father passed away when I was five years old. My mother could not educate me alone, so my education did not progress beyond grade two. I went to India when I was 11 years old. I forgot about it for a long time after going to India for work at a young age.

I spent about 18 years in Punjab. We used to come and go to the village fairs. As I grew older, I got married. I had two sons. Later, my wife left me. Now I have two sons, aged 17 and 14. The eldest works in a hotel in Butwal. He has met his expenses on his own. The younger one is studying with his sister in our four-storey house.

If there is a problem in raising a family, Later, I started carrying stones and crushing gravel. I am currently living alone at home. I do not cook two meals a day. I cook one meal in the morning. I save the evening meal for dinner. This is what happens when you are alone at home. There is no end to time.

It takes 15/20 days to crush a tractor of gravel. Stones are not available. They have to be brought from far below. And gravel has to be prepared. It is not always easy. That is why gravel is always crushed, but sometimes it takes a long time to transport a tractor. No matter what work you do, there is a problem for the worker. The work may be different, the problem may be small or big, but the problem is there. This is how it is in my experience.

When I was working only on crushing gravel, I wandered around the village and got lost when there was no work. What can I call a shop? It is just a way to forget. The shop is just in name. If you add it all up, it would cost two thousand rupees! People walking on the road sometimes buy random things. I keep things like noodles, biscuits, dalmot and sweets in this small hut. Sometimes it doesn't sell even for 10 rupees. Sometimes it sells for up to 100 rupees. There was no profit. I started a shop to forget, I have to crush gravel to meet household expenses.

In the meantime, I also worked at the Butwal Hotel. I went to the village to build a house. There was no progress from that. When I had problems supporting my family, I started carrying stones and crushing gravel. I pound gravel from morning till evening. This is my livelihood.

I have rice, lentils and vegetables in my diet. It is not that delicious. I can eat enough. I can even wear ordinary clothes. I wear ordinary clothes. I have only been able to kill time. I have not been able to do anything else. I have not done any farming at home. It is difficult to support myself. What can I do with animals? I feel like someone would have helped me!
