'I sell vegetables, ginger and turmeric worth 4.2 million every year'

What you should know

Since there was no income, my parents also used to work in the fields. If I didn't work every day, I would have a problem with what to eat today/tomorrow. That's why I also wanted to learn from watching my parents do farming from the age of 6/7. That's why I used to help with the work sometimes.

When I turned 20, I also became interested in agriculture. I could not study as I chose because I had problems with food. Since it was difficult to raise money for my studies, I started growing vegetables in a vegetable garden in 2055 BS at the age of 14/15. I live in Siddhakumakh Rural Municipality-3, Dhodchaur. I raised some money for my studies by selling the vegetables I produced and passed my SLC in 2058 BS. After that, it was difficult to raise money for higher education. Since there was no study environment, I started commercial vegetable farming in 2063 BS based on my general knowledge. That childhood interest has now made me a farmer. That interest has become an important part of my income generation.

Now I am not only raising a family of seven, I have also given employment to 15 people. I am now 43 years old. Two decades ago, I started commercial vegetable farming from two to four ropanis of land. Now I have expanded it to 57 ropanis, 40 in Uchalne and 17 in Dhodchaur. While my parents, sister-in-law and son-in-law look after Uchalne, my wife and I look after Dhodchaur. I have been growing not only vegetables but also ginger and turmeric on 57 ropanis of land. Every year I sell vegetables, ginger and turmeric worth 4.2 million. After deducting all expenses, I have saved up to 2 million.

In the past, when the financial situation of the house was very weak, we had to struggle a lot to eat two meals a day. Rice was only seen during festivals. We had to wait until Dashain to wear new clothes and eat meat. If someone in the house fell ill, we had to take a loan from the moneylender and take him for treatment. That is not the case now. After engaging in commercial vegetable farming, all the problems have been solved. The struggle I have faced in life and the pressure I have faced have brought me here. Now, I have not only raised a family of seven, but I have also provided employment to 15 people.

With the money I have earned from vegetable farming, I have bought a house and property, and I have been able to provide higher education to my children and siblings and get government jobs. I have also bought a Bolero car from the money I have earned by selling vegetables. Which has made it easier to take vegetables outside the district for sale.

When vegetables started being exported outside the district, it became much easier. Now the vegetables I produce reach Butwal in Rupandehi via Tulsipur in Dang. Sometimes there are problems due to fluctuations in the price of vegetables and Indian vegetables, but everything else is fine.

Recently, men and women who have passed Plus Two are going abroad in droves, saying they will study and earn money. Due to this, the villages are becoming deserted and cultivable land is becoming scarce. I want to show them that with willpower, dedication and hard work, you can grow gold on your own land while staying at home with your family.
