”You want to go abroad and earn money, you are a squatter”

I sit in a hotel room in the pond market of Khandbari all day in the sun sewing shoes. Nowadays, I also sell shoe soles, tuna and polish. My daily life is spent in sewing shoes which starts from 200 rupees. I spend my mornings and evenings with the money for polishing and repairing shoes.

Now I am 35 years old . Baama  didn't even teach me because he didn't read and write . He was taught to earn money by working for a wage from a young age and to avoid morning and night shifts. That's what I learned too.

I also learned to sew shoes by watching others work. 9 years have passed and he started sewing shoes on the street. Everyday at 7am I arrive at Pokhari Bazar and my work starts . I used to charge from 10 to 100 rupees for sewing small shoes. In the evening, I work in the dark until my eyes run out . I have made an iron needle to sew shoes, and I take thread on it and repair shoes . We have been in the trenches since time immemorial. It takes 10 minutes to walk from home to get here .

If you can make customers satisfied by doing good repairs, boxes are also available. Some days I don't earn even a single rupee, then I go to bed hungry. How many days and nights are spent only drinking water and sleeping! Where is the desire to go abroad and earn money? But what to do squatters? The money from shoe repair should also look after old baama . I am only their only hope.

I have to wake up at 5 in the morning to cook food for my mother . After preparing everything for them, I will arrive at the pool market at 7 o'clock. I have also taught my wife Sita to sew shoes. She also works when I am sick . I married intercaste . She is the daughter of a Sherpa . Married after matching their hearts.

Before sewing old shoes like this, I used to work as a daily wage worker . 9 years ago, even though I worked for one week, the contractor did not pay on time. I started doing wage labor from the age of 15. I am also a good house builder. I am satisfied to repair shoes by sitting on the street with a small investment . It is not enough to earn money, but it is enough to eat. Being squatters, our family did not have land.

My father used to farm in the land of a sahuji. As he has been farming for more than 35 years, the land owner has given us 10 meters long and 20 meters wide land for free . On that land, we have made a fence with tin. We are living in that house now. Seeing the suffering of our family, they also built the house with the help of neighbors. If I can earn, I have the idea to make a good house for my old parents.

There is no place to plant vegetables . Everything has to be bought and eaten. A handful of greens is enough to reach one cup. It costs 50 rupees. It is very expensive . I earn up to one thousand a day repairing shoes. You don't always earn like this, sometimes you earn only 3-4 hundred, you have to be satisfied with that. Sardar earns about 20,000 per month. We feel that we cannot raise children, even though we have been married for a long time, we have not decided to give birth to children.

At this age, I also feel like eating and drinking, what to do when there is no money, I have to die. Having to buy and eat everything is a problem. You can't buy new clothes and wear them whenever you want. I wear old and small clothes. I wear the old clothes given by someone with love as if they were new . With my income, it is difficult to buy and wear new clothes only once a year.

Everything is usually expensive in the capital. Salt costs 25 rupees per kilo. I will ask the chairman of Ward No. 1 to take the subsidy salt, it will cost 10 rupees . Rice is not available for less than 2500 per sack. 100 rupees per kilo of rice. A bag of rice is not enough for 10 days . Not only in the morning and evening, it is also spent on afternoon tea and lunch. My wife and I spend 100 rupees daily for lunch. One hundred rupees does not even fill half of the stomach.

I have been saving a little bit of money every day because I am ill. Even though I don't have anything in my age now, I have saved some money because I need money for treatment in my old age. The health of the elderly parents also had to be taken care of. Their social security allowance also helps in the treatment. Well, how long will life go on like this! Finally had to run until it runs.
