”I am saving 40,000 per month by selling vegetables”

I wake up at 4 in the morning when my alarm goes off. Hatmukh Dhoivari I reach the vegetable garden which is 50 meters away from the house. After that, I fertilize the vegetables, irrigate and fertilize them. I take a long breath after fencing the wavy vegetables. After the maintenance, I start picking vegetables. Traders from Khalanga, Srinagar place orders a day in advance. So I pick vegetables only as per demand.

Weigh it and pack it in a plastic bag and bring it home . Even then there is no rest. After grazing the cows and eating at 10 in the morning, I barely rest for two hours . After working outside in the afternoon, I start the vegetable Godmel again around 4 pm.

Earlier, when I lived with my parents in Sharada Municipality-4, I could not study beyond the 6th grade due to lack of finances. Married at the age of 15/16 . There were two sons. The responsibility of expenses for 6 members of the family fell on my shoulders . I couldn't get a job because I couldn't read. In the beginning, I worked to make ends meet. 500 per day was used to cover household expenses while working. He was interested in agriculture since childhood. So, I started vegetable farming at the age of 21 to support my family. Now I am 44 years old . I have continued agriculture even now.

I have grown cucumbers, beans, capsicum, tomatoes, basante corn, potatoes, onions etc. on seven plantations. At present, cucumbers are being sold at 40 per kg, beans at 70, potatoes at 45, bodi at 80, long parsley at 35, and onions at 40. I am now selling up to 4/5 thousand vegetables daily by ordering and retailing . Vegetables worth 10/12 lakhs are sold annually. 4 to 5 lakhs will be saved after deducting all expenses. I have added some land with the remaining money . It is okay to teach all the other two sons . While working as a laborer in Khalanga market around 2057/58, after seeing local cucumbers being sold for between 50 and 100 rupees, I tested the labor profession by using cucumbers in the two plantation fields of Barla, which were joined by a bachelor forever.

After earning more than 20,000 in one season in the first year, the juice settled on this . That made me more excited and even now I am growing vegetable crops including cucumbers . When the demand for vegetables started to increase, I rented the local land and cultivated vegetables. It was very difficult in the beginning . After slowly starting to find a market, I bought three plantation farms with the money I earned from selling vegetables. After returning the leased land, I am now planting vegetables on my own seven-planted land .

Parents are not with me now . Two sons also live in the city for studies. We are only husband and wife at home . We work together as two people. When I sell 4,000 to 5,000 vegetables daily, sometimes I sell 1 lakh and sometimes 150,000 vegetables in a month.

From that, I send 30/40 thousand every month to my son who is studying in the city . No need to buy food and vegetables for two people at home . 15/20 thousand is enough to spend on health care and other needs. I am saving up to 40,000 per month by cutting all the expenses. With that saved money, I bought a house and land.

In the past, I used to walk an hour longer to reach Khalanga to sell vegetables. Now buyers come to buy vegetables at home. This has made it easier. After starting vegetable farming, two people have got employment at home . In the past, I had to wait and hope that the people I knew would get me a job somewhere. If you don't get a job, sometimes you have to go hungry, but that's not the case now.
