Sometimes climbing the lake with the flock of sheep and sometimes falling down the river, life is being cut. Even if the house is in Puthauttarganga Rural Municipality-11 Upper Shera of Rukum East, you cannot spend your old age in the same place. 220 sheep who have become friends are leading them to the hill.
Although it is not possible to stay comfortably at home while living a busy life, after getting married at the age of 19 42 years ago, the husband and wife did not have to fall apart.
Although three daughters and one son were born, we are now only old people in the family . Among the four children, the first daughter died after being hit by a stone falling from Bhir while she was going to Gwala . The next 2 daughters got married and went to work. One son is also abroad. It has been many years since the daughter-in-law Dang came down to teach her grandchildren. Therefore, family and wealth are the same sheep. The household expenses have been covered by the income from the sheep raised by keeping the harem.
The price of a sheep now ranges from 18 to 25 thousand. As income accounting is not possible every day, if you calculate it once a year, the same 8/9 lakhs will be earned by selling sheep and wool. Where are all the savings earned?
We have kept three shepherds for the care and maintenance of the sheep . We also give wages to shepherds who work with us for twelve months at the rate of one/one lakh per person per year . Income and expenses are equal when feeding and treating sheep . It has become more fun than earning by grazing sheep.
Earlier, we used to make a living with our own food, but now we have to buy rice from the market . 60,000 to 70,000 is spent annually on the purchase of food including rice. The price of goods in the lake is almost twice as much as in the market. A sack of rice costs 3,000. Dal is up to 500 kg. 1500 per month is spent on salt, oil and marmalade. Medicines cost 30-40 thousand a year and clothes cost 15-20 thousand. After cutting all the expenses, the same 2/3 lakh is saved in a year.
Son-in-law will watch, so there is no need to send expenses to daughter-in-law and grandchildren. However, we love them and buy them clothes during the festival . A lakh of rupees earned by hard work is equal to crores for us. Even though the house built in the year of marriage is old, it cannot be lived in for a long time, so it feels very dear. Most of the time, we carry the grain leaves and 'sew..sew..' to the sheep.
This time last week of November, we left home with sheep. Passing Rolpa's Thwang, we have crossed the lake of Pyuthan's Naubhain and arrived at Thule Dah of Musikot in Rukum West in the first week of November. From here we will go back to Buki (lake) near Dhorpatan in the last week of February.
After grazing sheep in Dhorpatan until August, we return home in August-October and celebrate the festival. When I get a chance, I sometimes reach home. He goes to the forest with the old shepherd to graze the sheep.
I stay in the shed and cook, spin wool and weave radipakhi . You can't earn much by selling Radipakhi. I used to sell 15-20 thousand Radipakhi in a year to cover my pocket expenses . When sitting in a shed, you can't say anything about winter-rain, rain-clouds and cold-hot. Here in the lake, who will listen to our sorrow!
Since the shepherds do not have much desire, they have become accustomed to suffering. I offer flowers to Jalaki (the place of the deity made in Buki) wishing that the family, the shepherd and the sheep will not suffer, and that they will be able to eat after doing their deeds. I want to increase the size of the herd by adding more sheep.
