After his mother died when he was young, his father took him to herd goats in the village where he lived
Even though he lives in a squatter settlement of Bhimdatta Municipality-18, Salghari, there is information about the corners of the city. Half of his 40-year-old life has been spent carrying carts, so everyone calls him 'thelawala'. I was making a living by transporting people in a pedal rickshaw. After the introduction of auto-rickshaws for a few years, we became unemployed enough to pedal and drive rickshaws.
After the rickshaw stopped running, I have been carrying goods in a cart for household expenses . After loading the goods in the cart, I reached the Mahendranagar market and the surrounding areas. They call me if they have to move the goods of the camp or if they have to deliver the goods bought from the market to their home. After sweating all day, it is time to eat in the evening-morning.
Lautan Kamaiya's father lived in a house in Bedkot in Kanchanpur. When my mother died when I was young, my father took me to herd goats in the village where he worked. In Bedkot, we got food in the evening and morning only by grazing goats all day long. After working as a goatherd for five/six years, I ran away with my friend at the age of 14 and reached Kathmandu. I got a lump sum of 30,000 when I returned from cooking and washing dishes in a house in Kathmandu for three years.
Even after returning to Mahendranagar, he got a job of cooking in a house . 1500 per month for that. After getting married at the age of 20 in 2060, he started suffering from lack of expenses. After finding a loan of 20,000 to feed my husband/wife, I bought a pedal rickshaw from Khati in India. Driving a rickshaw all day was saving four/five hundred . When autorickshaws started running in the market while he was paying the household expenses, he stopped getting customers .
I decided to sell the rickshaw and buy a handcart after the income dried up while adding to the family. He has been a friend for 10 years and earns up to 1000-1200 a day by carrying goods. 4 children, wife and old father become depressed when they return empty-handed on the day they don't get work . Although the eldest son works, two daughters and one son go to school. I am 15 and my eldest son Suraj earns 8/10 thousand a month by running a cart. 500 per month for the eldest daughter studying in 9th grade and 300 per month for the younger daughter and son studying in 3rd grade . It costs 10/12 thousand for admission and buying new dress and books.
Since there is no farmland, we have to buy salt, oil, flour, rice, and vegetables. 5,000 worth of dal-rice per month, 2,000 per cylinder of gas, 1,000 per month for salt, oil and marmalade. One and a half/two thousand is spent for the maintenance of the cart in a month . When someone is sick at home, you have to look for a loan. The old-age allowance received by the father is good enough to buy medicine. Sometimes I feel tired of not having enough money in my pocket and not being able to meet the needs of my children. At that time, I share my grief with wife Geeta . Then Geeta herself reminds the children that their father has no money . It's easy because the wife understands .
Sometimes I feel like drinking tea while walking around the market. Remembering that the money for drinking a cup of tea comes with a pinch of salt, I don't drink that too . A cup of tea costs Rs 25. When a guest comes, it feels sad to not be able to feed them delicious food and welcome them with an open heart . 7 years ago, the wife was unable to give birth normally and twins were born during an operation. The 70,000 sapti he took from his sister when his wife was pregnant has not yet been paid. I am walking with that debt in Thaplo .
