Social media is very powerful. A well-learned jockey will benefit. This is the main lesson that 11 years of experience in the gym business has taught me. Social media has helped me a lot in my business journey since the beginning.
I embarked on a 'fitness journey' since 2009 to become fit and healthy. Since I was in this field because I had to be fit, I started enjoying it. So I started my own gym in 2013. At that time fitness was not based on science. It was felt that there is a gap, not based on science. It was thought that everything from 'workout', 'diet' should be based on science. Around 2014 I also started YouTube. I started creating 'content' related to fitness. I started giving information about fitness, gym.
In the beginning, I started the gym in Kumaripati and expanded it. Opened in Kamaladi after 2 years. I also started in Maitidevi, Baneshwar and Maharajgunj before covid. Now I also run a podcast. Many people now watch podcasts. I also make fitness content regularly. Even before starting my business, I did an internship at a gym. From there I came to know about the gap in the industry.
Next, I find that people's understanding of this field is also lacking. What happens at the gym? What is fitness? I don't think people have a good understanding. There are also questions about why this is the business. I started the business because I am a fitness fanatic. Again my fitness routine increased my discipline, which made me think twice before embarking on the venture. After starting the
business, I ran into many difficulties. Like, I had an idea about fitness. He knew what to do in fitness. But how the business works, that was not the idea. Again no one in my family had a business. At first it was difficult to know how to do the 'setup'. I was about to start with a very low budget. I started with 15-16 lakhs. I paid 3 to 4 lakhs as rent. I had arranged the goods for 8 to 10 lakhs. There was no money to buy things. I had made it in the metal workshop showing the sample photos of the machine. Now many local places that make such gym equipment have opened. At that time I mostly let myself make stuff. Again the goods were expensive. After the business started getting better, I started replacing it a little bit.
initially had to run at a loss for 6-7 months. I thought that having knowledge and skills in a subject and running a business in it is a different thing. Then I realized that marketing was not enough on my part and started content creation. Workout plans are not the same for everyone.
also varies a lot according to your experience and ability. With this understanding I developed the business, which was a different aspect of my business at that time. Nutrition also varies from person to person. That is what I promoted in the business. Which we still do. We didn't charge any extra money for this.
At the beginning, the financial aspect will affect the business. Later, how much more effort you put in will mean a lot. How we teach and support newcomers to fitness makes a big difference in business. We put extra effort into that.
Visitors to our gym can initially take a two-day trial. If you are satisfied with it, you can take 'membership' and if you are not satisfied, you can not take it. What is the lifestyle, what is the goal, how much time to reach it? Accordingly, the gym is planned.
When I started in 2009, going to the gym meant making a living. Women were not in the gym. Gradually from 2013/14 people started coming to the gym due to health conditions. It is common knowledge that you can not only lose weight, but also gain weight by going to the gym. Coming back to 2017/18 added the understanding that everyone needs to exercise, not just fattening and slimming. After coming in 2021, the 'concept' that exercise is also necessary for mental health increased.
I don't think you have to stick to the gym with whatever fitness trends are coming up. For example Zumba was very much in trend around 2012/13. Later, other such trends followed. Now 'Pilates' is also in trend. Not all trends are for all businesses. I think I should do better at what I'm doing. It seems to be the case in all kinds of businesses. Don't go all in at once, which is seen in many 'restart-ups' these days. My plan is to provide good service. The good thing is that the current trends are very health-focused. The target audience of
gym is 15 to 30-40 age group. I am also creating content for the same group. In this way, we got to understand what those who want to get into fitness need. Now many people are doing content creation business. I started creating content in 2014 to promote my business.
The current economic crisis and the impact of covid have harmed all businesses. Many young people have gone abroad. Many of those who are here do not want to stay in Nepal. This has often affected business. There are many young people in the gym. But now many young people have gone abroad. It is also causing problems in this business. Now the competition of gym in this market has increased. The gym itself has opened up a lot. However, due to the migration of young people, there is a problem in the gym business.
Not everyone who comes to a trial gym business takes membership. What makes sense is how we're messaging them, how we're marketing. These are the things to remember if you want to do this business. As if we are also doing consciousness work. I myself listen, observe and react to the feedback of others.
Now many young people are saying that there is no opportunity. Disappointment is seen. All businesses are currently affected by the financial crisis. As soon as that gets better, everyone's business starts getting better. Now is how to save the business. It seems that gradually this problem will be solved and we should think about how to raise the business and make it better. I currently have four gyms. There are plans to add gyms elsewhere. Waiting for the right time. Starting a
business also requires business skills. Running a business is no longer just a skill. Investors should also think. Business does not run only with the feeling that I want to grow a business, work for the country, create employment. Getting to know people, networking is very important. Will your idea work in the market? Only by thinking will some plans be made. It's not even a leap that the idea is unique. Pre-planning is necessary to determine whether an idea can be monetized or not. Money is necessary to work for the country. Many people think this aside which is not correct. Both 'passion' and knowledge are required to work.
Some businesses require substantial initial investment. Some businesses do not require much investment. A business like a gym requires investment. For example, if you want to start a gym business but don't have a lot of money, you can start working as a personal trainer. There are also gyms that have been opened with an investment of 3/4 crores. I started with 15-16 lakhs when I started. My parents had saved money for education. I used that. Even at that time it cost 30-40 lakhs to open a gym. I didn't have enough money. I also thought that I would not be able to open a gym. My advice to every new comer in the
business is to understand, study and move forward with all the business processes. It is necessary to understand everything whether there is a return as per the investment. Another piece of advice is to never stop reading and acquiring knowledge, no matter what business you pursue. It brings confidence. Confidence is needed in every business. My advice is to learn how to use social media. Create a 'personal brand'. Create content to spread awareness among people.
