US President Donald Trump has said that Venezuela should only buy goods from the United States with the money it receives from the new 'oil deal'. President Trump said via social media platform Truth Social that Venezuela should only buy goods made in the United States.
However, Washington has not said anything about the new agreement. Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodriguez has also said that she is ready for an oil deal.
Trump wrote, "I have been informed that Venezuela will only buy American-made goods with the money from our new oil deal." Trump said that Venezuela should buy American agricultural products, medicines, medical equipment, electrical grid and power plant improvement machinery.
Trump further wrote, "Venezuela is now committed to making the United States its main trading partner. This wise decision is a very good thing for both Venezuela and the United States."
Earlier, the United States had said that Venezuela's oil sales would be under its own control "indefinitely." Not only that, it also said that it would decide how the money from oil sales would be used.
Venezuela is the world's largest oil producer. But despite its vast resources, oil production is very low. According to the US Energy Information Administration, Venezuela has about 303 billion barrels of crude oil reserves, which is about 20 percent of the world's total oil reserves.
US troops have taken President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores into custody in a surprise attack in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas. US President Donald Trump has declared that the US will continue to govern Venezuela until a "safe and fair transfer of power" is achieved.
The US carried out an airstrike in Caracas at around 2pm local time on Saturday. At that time, 11 explosions were heard. The Venezuelan government then issued a statement declaring a state of emergency. US President Trump immediately announced that Maduro and his wife were in the custody of US troops.
