BYD overtakes Tesla in electric vehicle sales

What you should know

Chinese company BYD has overtaken American company Tesla as the world's largest seller of electric vehicles. BYD has surpassed Elon Musk's Tesla for the first time in annual sales, BBC news reported.

According to a report released by BYD, the company sold a total of 4.6 million electric vehicles in 2025. This number is 7.7 percent more than in 2024. This includes all types of vehicles, including new energy vehicles, passenger vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles.

BYD alone sold 2.25 million units of battery-powered cars this year. This is 27.86 percent more than the previous year. Tesla, on the other hand, is releasing its annual report on Friday. However, last week's analysis stated that Tesla sold 1.65 million battery-powered vehicles this year.

'This year has been challenging for the American company due to mixed consumer reactions to Tesla's new offerings, hesitation about Musk's political activism and Chinese competition,' writes BBC business reporter Osmond Xia. 'Last October, Tesla launched cheaper versions of its two popular models in an attempt to boost sales. The company was criticized for being too slow to compete in the market by bringing new and affordable alternatives.’

In order to increase Tesla’s market share, shareholders decided to give Musk, its co-founder and CEO, a pay package of $1 trillion last November to keep him in the company. For this, he will have to increase Tesla’s market value to $2 trillion and Tesla’s sales to $20 million.

In addition, there are conditions for selling millions of humanoid robots in the next decade. The BBC has reported that Tesla is investing significantly in a robot called ‘Optimus’ and ‘robotaxis.’
