While IT companies are investing billions of dollars in artificial intelligence (AI), Apple has been criticized for lagging behind. Now, Apple has partnered with another major technology company, Google, to develop and incorporate AI features into its products.

Apple's Siri (voice assistant) is set to be upgraded with Google's AI technology this year. On Monday, Google and Apple issued a joint statement announcing a multi-year collaboration based on Google's Gemini and cloud technology. With this, Apple intelligence will be based on Google's AI model in the coming days.

'Our careful evaluation has concluded that Google's AI technology is the best fit for Apple's Foundation models,' The joint statement said, 'We are excited about the innovative experiences this collaboration will provide for Apple users.' Apple intelligence will remain in Apple products such as iPhone, Mac, Watch and 'private cloud computing'. However, it has been claimed that the privacy policy will remain in place.

Google generated $235.86 billion in advertising revenue in 2023, or 77 percent of the company's total revenue. This collaboration between Apple and Google on AI technology has been questioned by technology professionals and digital rights activists. Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who also heads Tesla and XA, has responded by saying that the partnership looks like an unfair concentration of power for Google, given that Google already owns Android and the Chrome browser.

Musk's comments suggest that Google could have a monopoly on 'data' and 'technology' worldwide as it expands from mobile operating systems and web browsers to AI infrastructure, and now Apple's devices will also use Google's AI technology. Google generated $235.86 billion in advertising revenue in 2023, or 77 percent of the company's total revenue. Google's market capitalization has exceeded $2 trillion.

Apple owns the iOS operating system. In 2024, iOS devices accounted for about 28 percent of the global smartphone market. Analysts have noted that the partnership between the two giants risks confining AI model development to a few large companies. With giants like Apple and Google coming together, it will be difficult for smaller AI startups to enter the market, writes Luis Rizzo in the German portal PPC Land. In 2024, Apple collaborated with OpenAI to launch the ChatGPT feature on devices including the iPhone. Apple's Siri has been offering the ability to ask ChatGPT if it can't answer complex questions. According to Reuters, Apple has stated that there has been no change in its partnership with OpenAI.
