Jurgen Klopp has told the German FA (DFB) that he is "interested" in becoming the coach of the German national football team. The DFB announced on Friday that current German coach Julian Nagelsmann had resigned.
Nagelsmann's contract runs until 2028. Nagelsmann resigned on Friday, shortly after Germany's defeat to Paraguay in the last 32 of the World Cup. In a statement, the DFB said that talks with the former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund coach Klopp were progressing and thanked Nagelsmann for his three-year tenure.
Klopp, who led Liverpool to the Champions League and Premier League titles, is now Red Bull's head of global football. But Sky Germany reported that Klopp is interested in becoming Germany's coach. The 38-year-old Nagelsmann had been in Frankfurt for three and a half hours to discuss his future before resigning.
German tabloid Bild reported that Nagelsmann had been offered €8 million in compensation, which is his one-year salary. “The decision could have been anything, but it was easy for me to make the decision,” Nagelsmann said in a statement. “My top priority is to bring the team success, but in such a disappointing situation, a new start is necessary.”
He also apologized to Germany’s supporters for their early exit from the World Cup. “I sincerely apologize for disappointing you, we could not have had a memorable night at the World Cup,” he said. DFB sporting director Rudi Voller said of Nagelsmann in a statement: “He is and will remain an excellent coach. I am confident that he will continue his success.’
The defeat to Paraguay is the latest setback for four-time champions Germany. Germany also crashed out of the group stage at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in Qatar. Germany has also struggled at the European Championship. They were beaten in the last 16 by England in 2021 and by eventual winners Spain in 2024.
After sacking Nagelsmann immediately after the World Cup, the DFB felt it was too early to keep a failed coach in charge to avoid a repeat of the 2018 and 2022 games. Joachim Low led Germany to the World Cup in 2014. But he was kept in charge for another three years after the first-round exit at the 2018 World Cup. Hansi Flick was given an extra year after his failure in 2022.
Nagelsmann’s appointment was initially seen as a huge success by the DFB, as clubs across Europe were keen to sign him. He became the youngest coach in Bundesliga history when he took over at Hoffenheim at the age of 28. He has also coached other German teams Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.
Nagelsmann initially signed a short-term contract until Euro 2024. He extended the contract before the tournament began, and then renewed it again in January 2025, extending it until Euro 2028. Germany, despite winning the group stage at Euro 2024, felt that the team was improving under Nagelsmann after losing to Spain in the quarter-finals.
