Mitchell Marsh's century-scoring Lucknow Super Giants defeated Gujarat Titans by 33 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday. Gujarat, who had already secured a place in the playoffs, were badly hurt by the defeat.
Gujarat are at the top with 18 points from 13 matches. The team has one game left to play. If Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings win both their remaining matches, they will leapfrog top-placed Gujarat into the qualifiers. Lucknow, who are already out of the playoff race, remain in seventh place with 12 points from 13 matches.
After Marsh scored 117 runs, Gujarat lost the toss and came into bat. Player of the match Marsh hit 10 fours and 8 sixes off 64 balls. Marsh added 95 in 10 overs for the first wicket with Aiden Markrum and 121 for the second wicket with Nicholas Pooran before being dismissed by Arshad Khan.
Markram hit 3 fours and 2 sixes in 24 balls before being dismissed by Cy Kishore. Pooran made 56 off 27 balls with 4 fours and 5 sixes and captain Rishabh Pant remained unbeaten on 16 runs with 2 sixes off 6 balls.
Serfan Rutherford and Masood Shahrukh Khan added 86 runs in 40 balls, but Gujarat, who came in reply, could only score 202 runs by losing 9 wickets in 20 overs. Rutherford was dismissed for 38 off 22 balls with 1 four and 3 sixes. Shah Rukh scored 57 runs off 29 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes. Sai Sudarshan scored 21 off 16 balls, captain Shuvaman Gill scored 35 off 20 balls with 7 fours and Jos Buttler scored 33 runs off 18 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes.
Lucknow's Will O'Rourke took 3 wickets for 27 runs in 4 overs. Ayush Badoni and Avesh Khan took 2 wickets each.
