Nepali Congress leader Arjun Narsingh KC has suggested to party officials to nominate Basna Thapa, an MP elected from Dailekh-1, as the leader of the parliamentary party. KC said that the team of officials who came to discuss with him to find consensus on the party leader suggested Thapa as the party leader because he is a young, new face, a woman and directly elected from a remote area. He has also formally informed that he will not contest for the party leader. Even after two months of the election, the Nepali Congress has not been able to select the leader of the parliamentary party. Questions are being raised about the ability of the all-round party leadership, saying that the party leader has not been selected through internal management within the party.

After failing to choose the parliamentary party leader, questions are being raised on Gagan-Bishwa

‘Since our office bearers are trying to be popular, I suggested why not Basna Thapa, who is a youth, a woman, a remote area and a direct elected official,’ said KC. ‘I have been raising this issue not only with the office bearers but also in the party meetings.’ He said that Yogesh Gauchan Thakali, who has been elected twice from Mustang, could be an alternative to making the party leader from the youth. Otherwise, KC said that one of the MPs representing Madhesh should be made the party leader.

The party officials have claimed that they have reached a rough understanding to make one of the three the party leader.

An official said that the formal process will be taken forward after the Central Performance Committee meeting on Monday

approves it.
