The Nepali Congress has started a nationwide campaign to update active memberships from Tuesday, targeting the 15th general convention. President Gagan Thapa visited the office of the ward working committee of Kathmandu-30 and updated the membership. Thapa announced the start of the nationwide campaign by updating his membership.

The Nepali Congress has named the work of updating memberships by visiting the concerned ward itself as 'Jara Abhiyan'. General Secretary Gururaj Ghimire said that unless there are special reasons, the membership will be updated in the concerned ward. Earlier, the Nepali Congress had about 900,000 members. He said that after receiving less votes than the number of active members in more than 16 constituencies in the 21 Falgun election, an attempt was made to identify the actual membership by updating the membership.

The policy of selecting candidates from the party in all level elections through primary elections was passed by the Mahasamith of last Poush, so an attempt was made to create a Congress ID to organize it. For that, the concerned member will have to go to the ward and get ‘biometric’ done.

The former President Sher Bahadur Deuba faction, which did not accept the existence of the Central Working Committee that came from the special general convention, has opposed the attempt to cancel old memberships and renew them, calling it a conspiracy. The then acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka, who led the Deuba group, had opposed the campaign and issued a statement on Monday using the letterhead ‘Nepali Congress, Central Office, BP Smriti Bhawan, Lalitpur, Nepal’ as the acting president.

He has said that since the old renewal and distribution of new active memberships have already been done, it is biased and objectionable to renew them.

General Secretary Ghimire said that the old memberships are not being cancelled but are only being updated. ‘Those who do not want to be members voluntarily are not active, the work of keeping records is being done. Whatever they want to be, even if they have practical problems, we will be flexible to the extent possible,’ he said, ‘Old leaders are our heritage and property. We also make a special request to them. We will also make it practical for leaders who have contributed for a long time to renew their membership.’

The campaign to update the membership will continue until mid-April. Along with this, other party activities will also be conducted. For that, the party has already deployed representatives in 165 constituencies in 77 districts.

After the membership renewal campaign is over, the ward convention will begin on Bhadra 2. The village-town convention will be held on Bhadra 7, the provincial assembly regional convention on Bhadra 17, the House of Representatives regional convention on Bhadra 24, and in cases where there is only one constituency, the district convention will also be held on the same day. Similarly, the district convention will be held on Asoj 2 and 3, the provincial convention on Asoj 7 and 8, and the central convention will be held on Asoj 16-19.
