UML and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) eye East Nawalparasi-1 after Shashank leaves

What you should know

The competition has become interesting this time in East Nawalparasi Constituency No. 1, which is a safe area for the Congress. This time, UML and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are also in a tough competition in the constituency where Congress leader Shashank Koirala has been consistently winning. UML and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) are trying to put a 'break' in the Congress's victory journey.

Koirala had won the election from this constituency four times before. He did not have to work hard to achieve victory. This time, Koirala is not in the fray. Nawalpur District Vice President Balkrishna Ghimire is contesting from the Congress.

The responsibility of preserving the legacy of BP Putra in this constituency, which has been winning for 18 years, has fallen on the shoulders of professor and lawyer Ghimire. Now, there is concern across the constituency whether the Congress legacy will be destroyed or saved.

This time, with Koirala not being a candidate, rival parties including UML, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and NCP are in the hunt to destroy the 'Congress fortress'. The Congress is claiming that the parties have united and entered the electoral contest by resolving the dispute that arose during the ticket distribution.

Koirala had won this constituency continuously from here from the first Constituent Assembly member election in 2064 BS to 2079 BS. Ghimire, who has become a candidate this time, is also considered a leader who has been involved in the local level and has a hold on the organization. However, leaders here say that not having a family legacy like Koirala could be a challenge for Ghimire. The Congress has been demanding that the district should have a local candidate for a long time. This time, even though he is a resident of the district, Ghimire faces the challenge of breaking the influence of the new party.

Currently, Rajan Gautam is the candidate from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in this area. He was also a candidate from the RSS in 2079. Except for Gautam, all are new candidates. RSS Gandaki Province President Gautam said that more than 24,000 people trusted him in the upcoming elections even though the organization was weak. He claimed that his victory is assured because the organization is strong now.

In 2079, Koirala got 27,067 votes, UML's Krishna Prasad Poudel 25,047 and Gautam 24,305 votes. Koirala defeated the UML candidate by a margin of 2,020 votes. The difference between the second-placed UML and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was only 742 votes.

UML has fielded Bhagirath Sapkota, a businessman, as its candidate. Sapkota is claiming that the people will trust him because he has a clear blueprint for economic prosperity and development. The competing parties and independent candidates are currently busy canvassing.
