The way the Congress runs the party by ignoring its members has collapsed: General Secretary Thapa

What you should know

Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has claimed that the way the party has been run by ignoring party members for a long time has now broken down.

Addressing the inaugural session of the party's second special general convention that began in Kathmandu on Sunday, General Secretary Thapa said that the special general convention is not a matter of becoming or not becoming someone, but a matter of struggle. Stating that the special general convention was called not as per their demands but as per the demands of the delegates, he said that whatever conclusion the closed session reaches will be acceptable.

He commented that the Congress has established itself as a party of living people rather than a party of corpses.

'The way the party was run for a long time has collapsed from today. Now no one can look down on a party member. Now those who sit above should salute those who sit below, not from below upwards,' he said, 'This struggle is not a struggle of becoming or not becoming someone within the party. It is also a matter related to how to run the party. There is a closed session tomorrow. I do not know where it will end.'

'If I had organized this general convention as the party center, I could have said that its agenda is this and that it will probably end here. This is a general convention requested by the members. You have asked for a change in policy and a change in leader. I am just a guest you have invited,' he added, 'Whatever the closed session decides tomorrow is acceptable to me. Your efforts today have established one thing, Congress is not a party of dead bodies but of living people.'
