In favor of benign politics

What you should know

Politics is the process, theory and practice of making decisions related to state power and public interest. Politics varies according to economic, social, history and struggle, constitution and law, and governance system, so its character also varies according to the country. In the context of Nepal, politics is understood as the thinking, process and behavior of running the state using the sovereignty of the people in a multi-ethnic, multilingual, multicultural and federal democratic republic.

The country could not find a way out of the old political parties. It is not that new groups have not emerged at different times. But they too fell into the trap of the chair. On the one hand, the unstable politics in the country and the major political changes that have taken place at different times continued to create an environment of instability in the country. On the other hand, the influence of external forces and geopolitics remained invisible. For this reason, the country could not take a certain pace.

When the old political parties held the reins of the country for a long time, the country could not make significant progress. Even in difficult times, the country could not get good leadership. Due to which the situation of the country was getting weaker day by day. In this environment, some new faces have also come forward as representatives of political parties.

Although there are more than a hundred registered parties, there are only about a dozen active and influential parties. But there is no difference in political culture between the parties. In politics, there should be ideas, ideals and philosophy. There should be a vision and mission of where to go. There should be clarity in the method and process of how we are doing this work to get here. Just as the vision and mission of a professional organization are decided, its activities are carried out accordingly and progress is achieved according to the goal. Politics is also a service-oriented organization, where is its path, where is the goal to be reached? Everyone talks only about abstract things. Abstract talk such as socialism, capitalism, feudalism, brokering, prosperity, economic revolution, welfare state, etc. is found. There is nothing different from one taking advantage of the other.

It is said that politics is a service, not a business. But when giving tickets in elections, when winning elections, when appointing someone to a high level, when transferring and promoting, there is a situation where money has to be paid everywhere. Those who pay money in this way work hard to raise investment. Such bad habits are being established as a culture. For this reason, the Gen-G movement took place. Even though at that time, the anarchists who fished in murky waters seized the opportunity.

The tendency to join the government that held elections in 6 months, become ministers for a few days, and fight elections on the ticket of a political party has made it clear that everyone is greedy for office.

In a democracy, a government without a political party is not possible. It is not even imagined. Therefore, if we are to build the future of Nepal and Nepalis by forming a government with a political party, we must be able to form a government of politicians who rise above hatred and division and prioritize cooperation, tolerance and national interest. Where there is a politics of harmony and consensus. For that, the following aspects are essential:

Behaviour of happiness and respect: Despite disagreements within politics, society or institutions, one should be able to behave in a dignified, restrained and responsible manner. A politician should pay attention to aspects such as mutual respect, use of dignified language, consensus, civilized expression, listening habits, respect in decisions, restraint in opposition, and maintaining dignity of position and responsibility.

Culture of cooperation: The practical practice of working together to achieve a common objective despite differences of opinion, practice and ideas between individuals, groups or political parties is the culture of cooperation. This can be considered a practice of understanding, coordination and shared responsibility.

Restrained leadership: Restrained leadership is a leadership that makes decisions and acts in a calm, responsible and balanced manner amidst excitement, impulses and pressure. Such leaders should have practical aspects such as the ability to tolerate disagreement, emotional decisions, control and dignity in behavior, the ability to understand the situation, balance in the use of power, and the habit of accepting responsibility.

Compliance with the law: The laws made in the country are applied equally to everyone. No one is above the law. It is the duty of a skilled politician to be able to work only within the boundaries of the law in a legal state.

Responsible expression: A political leader should speak responsibly. Unsubstantiated accusations, rumors, and provocations, provocative speeches, weaken themselves. A skilled politician should avoid such aspects as much as possible.

Direct contact with the people: Politicians who swear to serve the people by acting on the will of the people should be able to listen to the complaints of the general public and solve problems in time, which develops leadership skills.

Timely decisions and implementation: If any problem cannot be solved in time, its impact will be even greater and the damage will increase. Therefore, an environment where dissatisfaction increases should not be created by dragging out the problem.

Problem solving through dialogue and consensus: The best way to solve problems is through dialogue and consensus. It is considered good to be in politics to have the ability to reach a conclusion on disputes and disagreements that arise through dialogue, whether in power or on the streets.

Behavior of mutual respect: Those who respect others also get the respect of others, and those who do not respect them are not respected by others. Whether it is public or private, insults and hateful language should not be used in speech.

Politicians should be able to adopt the politics of dialogue and consensus. Failure to comply with such issues is reducing the level of politicians' speech. The tendency to do whatever they say has led to the second and third generations even passing on this behavior to newcomers, which has tarnished political culture. While there are many examples of dialogue and consensus in Nepali politics, there are also some examples where problems have become complicated due to the lack of dialogue and consensus.

Today's politicians need to study and analyze the long history of the past and demonstrate the culture of dialogue and consensus. If they only criticize other parties, get excited, decide the way forward without identifying their own ideas and ideals, and show greed for office, the country will suffer even more. Therefore, political parties have no choice but to move forward through dialogue and consensus. Despite their different views, consensus on issues such as the nation, nationality, sovereignty, integrity, and borders of the country is inevitable.
