Parties must be restructured, transformed, and purified. A positive message can be sent by replacing yesterday's tested and failed leadership with new and popular leadership.
What you should know
The Gen-G rebellion has added a new dimension to the history of Nepal. It has set a new starting point, a new watershed, and a new standard in politics. It is perhaps the rarest event in the world to bring about such a massive upsurge and change in such a short period of time. However, the same pride and power that was displayed the previous day was also met with unimaginable damage and destruction on the second day.
The power and solarity of the Gen-G movement are historical. The issues of the movement against corruption, misrule, and injustice are also of high importance. The greater the glimmer of hope, the more terrible the fire of anger is. The fire of rebellion was ignited only after the spark of hope was broken. Young people with the potential for a bright future shed blood and sacrificed themselves. Singha Durbar burned, historical heritage collapsed, but the arrogance and pride of the leaders have not collapsed yet.
Even though the characters in the ministerial chair have changed, the old, stale, and corrupt administration remains the same. The government has changed, the regime has not changed. The judiciary and constitutional bodies are all pawn cadres recruited yesterday. The government will change, the regime will not change until the entire bureaucracy, judiciary, constitutional bodies, and security agencies are restructured in a people-oriented manner. Gen-G's demand is a change in the entire corrupt state power. Therefore, the results according to the intensity of the movement have not been achieved.
The intention of the right-wingers, extremists, courtiers, anarchists, robbers, and scoundrels who were trying to fish in murky waters was to reduce the country to ashes and celebrate victory on the basis of that. The role of the army, police, armed forces, and employees, who are considered the pride of the country, could not remain beyond the scope of suspicion and question.
As far as the background and causal factors of the Gen-G rebellion are concerned, it is the irresponsible, corrupt, and anti-people misdeeds of the then government. After reaching the pinnacle of power through the people's votes, political parties and leaders remained indifferent to the people. When they entered the Singha Durbar, they became like prisoners within four walls, where the people could not reach. They kept falling into the trap of middlemen, bureaucrats, and capitalists. They failed the test of public relations. They kept burning the country in the ashes of corruption and middlemen. The result of this misrule and unemployment is the explosion of growing dissatisfaction and anger among the people - the Gen-G rebellion.
Party system and leader system
It has become a common saying in Nepali politics that the ‘old party and leadership’ are unacceptable. Parties and leaders have become the target of public anger. The current complaint is that the government and parties have not been responsible and accountable to the people, have not been people-centered. There is a huge gap of distrust between the party and the people. The rope of relationship has been broken. The bridge connecting them has been broken.
After entering Singha Durbar, the party and the people were separated. The gate of Singha Durbar was closed to the people, the people could not come in, the leaders could not see outside. The Prime Minister, ministers, and leaders were surrounded by brokers, mafia, and wealthy businessmen. There was a hustle and bustle of relatives, cronies, sycophants, and flatterers in the ministries and party offices. As a result, the leaders enjoyed the sycophants and lost their way.
The leaders could not see the people through the glasses of power. They were wrapped in the garlands of sycophants who were wearing the shell of brokers and workers. As the brokers and middlemen stood as a wall, the relationship between honest workers and the people and leaders broke down. Leaders left their base. Voters, people, grassroots people, and struggling workers were forgotten. Parties gradually emerged from the ground. And disappointment, dissatisfaction, and anger grew like a fire in the stubble. Leaders and parties could not understand this 'ground reality' in time.
Parties were plagued by the syndicate, factionalism, and familyism of certain leaders. Leaders were not warned, but their tendency to enslave increased. Politics was made into a job, not a service. Positions/facilities were considered like father's inheritance, like ancestral property. Constituencies were made like their own backyards, young leaders and workers were left frustrated for the rest of their lives because they could not enter there.
Even now, the arrogance and stubbornness of the leaders who were boycotted by the people and who were on the 'black list' are the same. There has been no change. Yesterday, the leaders who were given food, shelter, and security by the people were not protected by any cadres or military or police today. Why did the leaders have to be chased away and only abused? Why did they have to be so helpless, helpless, and worthless? They have neither the time nor the remorse to look back and see where we went wrong.
Dissatisfaction with the parties is burning. On the other hand, there is chaos and infighting within the parties. Shouldn't those in power in the party or the state have transparency, accountability, and a sense of responsibility? Let's look at examples from the world. We don't know the icons of struggle and ideals like Nelson Mandela. We don't learn from the Gandhis and Nehru of neighboring India. We don't even know Mahathir, who built Malaysia, or Lee Kuan Yew, who built Singapore. In Nepal, Pushpalal, Ganeshman, Manmohan, Krishna Prasad, and Madan Bhandari were ideals of politics. When will we learn from their sacrifice, dedication, and loyalty?
Reorganization of political parties
Due to the fatal tendency of the government elected through the democratic process not to run democratically and the power becoming totalitarian and authoritarian, our democracy has become weak, and the republic has fallen into crisis. The country had to bear the fate of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Democracy is a party system. In democracy, there can be an alternative to the party system, but there cannot be an alternative to the party system. However, the parties must be reorganized, transformed and purified. A positive message can be sent by changing the tested and failed leadership of yesterday and bringing in a new and popular leadership. The climax of anger is due to the irrelevant and failed leadership that has repeatedly been in the power axis and has not been able to give 'delivery' to the people according to the spirit of the republic when given the opportunity.
At this time, the saying 'to be corrected or not' is popular in the political market. Even in a crisis, the correct one rises, survives, moves forward and succeeds. It is impossible not to be corrected. The country, politics, and party do not work with the current methods, processes and methods. Therefore, a comprehensive reorganization of policies, methods, structures, working styles, agendas, and leadership is now necessary. Political parties cannot move forward without a 'major operation', 'restructuring', and 'radical reform'. The legitimate voice of senior leaders to play a parental role, to warn, advise, and hand over leadership to new ones has been raised strongly. But the sun has not yet set on the leadership's bell.
Now the political market is not going to run just by selling history and quoting leaders. Today's new generation is not going to believe it just by chanting the 'Gayatri Mantra' of Jabj, Maoism, and democratic socialism. How much interest will history also pay? It is not like a meter badge that keeps growing. Transformation gives a new direction, generational transfer gives continuity, and transfer gives stability. Now our party heritage cannot be 'retrofitted', it is necessary to completely rebuild it. In other words, the reorganization of political parties has become inevitable.
Progressive change of the constitution
A conspiracy to hijack the country's independence from the backdoor is ongoing. Domestic and foreign forces, who want to further push the country into the abyss of political crisis and fulfill their interests, are planning to have the constitution formed by the Constituent Assembly declared a failure and have it annulled and the democratic republic collapsed. Parties that have struggled for democracy for a long time need to be aware and vigilant by internalizing this harsh reality.
Protecting the constitution does not mean that we should carry the constitution made a decade ago as it is. Let us amend the constitution with progressive agendas in a way that fulfills the demands of the Gen-G movement and the people from the House of Representatives that will be formed with a 'fresh mandate' through elections. It is in the constitution that the achievements of the movement/revolution are institutionalized.
After the end of the feudal monarchy and the establishment of a republic through the People's Revolution of 2062/63, a democratic republic with federalism, inclusiveness, proportionality, and secularism was institutionalized through the constitution. The rebellion at this time was not against the system and the constitution. It is an attack on the incompetence seen in policy, leadership and implementation of the constitution. The constitution should be made more people-oriented by managing the Gen-G movement through change, addressing today's issues and strengthening the republic.
The roadmap for now
All Nepalis should be restrained and responsible when the nation is in the throes of crisis. Political parties, government, constitutional and security bodies, and ordinary citizens should all move forward on a common 'roadmap' by 'concrete analysis of the concrete situation' as Lenin said.
First: Political parties have no choice but to first comprehensibly self-reflect within their own parties, self-criticize the mistakes and weaknesses they have made, resolve not to make mistakes again, and apologize and go to the people. We should go to the people with a new 'vision', not an old, shabby legacy. The people will not believe us empty-handed. Let's go to the people's center with an agenda that can appeal to the people, including 'realization'. And finally, the people will see a new future in the faces of the party and leaders.
Parties need that feeling, willpower and commitment. Parties should immediately give the message that they have improved and are trying to move forward in a new way. The role of parties should be seen in removing untouchability, discrimination, feudal remnants like Kamaiya, Kamlari, Hali, Gothala in society and in launching a campaign for social transformation. Central leaders of all parties should dare to make their property details public.
Second: Such a big rebellion took place in the country, unimaginable destruction and devastation took place. In such a situation, it is surprising that political parties remain prisoners of inaction and indecision. It is not about being silent, inactive or asleep in the face of challenges. It is necessary to take the initiative in solving problems by immediately holding dialogue, discussions and meetings between the parties. Unity between the parties that fought for democracy and the republic yesterday is indispensable in the current hour of crisis. Parties do not have the luxury of delaying cooperation between the left-democratic forces to protect national independence, the constitution and the republic.
Third: Ending corruption and misgovernance are the main issues of the day. Work should be taken forward with national consensus on the burning issue of forming a high-level asset investigation commission, investigating the assets of all those holding public office, and taking strict action against the corrupt.
Fourth: The issues, agenda, and aspirations of the people, including the youth, who were established in the Gen-G rebellion, should be addressed precisely.
Fifth: At this time, the parties have two options. One, restoring the House of Representatives. The other, preparing for elections. A conclusion should be reached as soon as possible on which option to choose. A concrete agreement is urgently needed among the parties. Although it is unconstitutional, the House of Representatives has been dissolved and elections have been announced, and elections should be the common course of action now, without any ambiguity.
But it is surprising that the parties are not politically and psychologically prepared for the elections even after the election schedule has been made public. Peace and security are the first condition for holding elections in a fair and fearless environment. Despite the challenges of demoralized security personnel, looted weapons, and misuse by people with criminal backgrounds who have escaped from prison, there is no alternative to elections. If elections cannot be held on time, Bangladesh will have to bear its fate. Therefore, fair and free elections must be held on time, and all political parties must have an Arjuna-inspired election.
Finally, according to mythology, a beautiful bird called the Phoenix lives for a long time, its energy, youth, and speed can all be exhausted, but its ambition cannot. As it flies to great heights, it sets its own wings on fire and burns, turning into ashes. Because of the gift of rebirth, a new Phoenix is born from the ashes, more brilliant, and stronger. Today's Yaksha question is - will we rise from the ashes as a new Phoenix or will we be 'Phoenix' in the ashes?
The Nepali people have given us the gift of rising again from the ashes. If we resolve to stand with new ideas, principles, new systems, and new strength, like the 'Phoenix' bird, we will rise stronger, better, with new hope and energy. May a 'Phoenix' live within us, which can rise from the ashes with even greater freshness and give us a new life.
