A week after completing his three-day India visit, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal is set to visit China. At the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, Minister Khanal is set to leave for Beijing on June 14 for a four-day visit. Khanal's visit to China is being seen as an effort to maintain balanced relations with the two neighboring countries.
During the visit, the minister will hold bilateral talks with his counterpart Wang and also meet leaders of the Communist Party of China (CPC). ‘The Foreign Minister has already started the necessary preparations after the visit was confirmed,’ said a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. ‘In fact, he left for Delhi only after his visit to China was confirmed.’ While in Delhi, Minister Khanal met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and other senior officials and discussed a wide range of bilateral issues including border, trade, commerce, connectivity, infrastructure, energy and supply of chemical fertilizers.’ An official close to them said that Foreign Minister Khanal is going to Beijing amid growing suspicions in Beijing that the current government is leaning more towards Western countries. ‘The purpose of the Foreign Minister’s visit to Beijing is to build on that visit and reassure the Chinese leadership that Nepal is committed to balanced diplomacy.’ This also means showing Nepal a balanced approach with both neighbors,’ the official added.
Minister Khanal will meet with former ministers, leaders, high-ranking officials and China experts to seek their advice before going to Beijing, the official said.
Some high-ranking officials of the CPC came to Kathmandu immediately after the election on 21 Falgun. They met with Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSWP) President Ravi Lamichhane and Khanal, among other leaders, to discuss the new government's vision. During that time, they also inquired whether the new government would adopt a pro-Western policy.
