A writ petition has been filed in the Supreme Court demanding a halt to the government's preparations to remove squatter settlements.

Gopal Ranpaheli, 47, and others living in Thapathali settlement have filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court. Their writ is under study in the Supreme Court. A decision will be made on whether to register or hear the case at some point.

In the writ, the opposing respondents have sought an order to quash the notice issued by the court to remove or vacate the squatter settlements on the banks of the rivers of the Kathmandu Valley based on any decision or order.

The writ seeks an order to remove, displace, and take no action against landless or squatter families without providing concrete arrangements for alternative, acceptable, and humanely-mannered settlement or resettlement, without providing adequate prior notice and without consulting the affected families, and without completing the verification and identification process.

The Government of Nepal has been demanded to issue a mandate to immediately prepare and conduct a survey, identification and verification of all landless squatter families living on the river banks of the Kathmandu Valley in accordance with the Right to Housing Act, 2075 BS, and the Land Act, 2021 BS.

The writ petition has demanded that an interim order be issued by the respondents in accordance with Rule 49 of the Supreme Court Rules, 2074 BS until the final decision on the petition is made.

The squatters have protested after the government decided to remove the squatter settlements. This morning, they had protested in Thapathali protesting the government's decision. They have urged to ensure the right to housing, saying that the dozer terror should stop.

The United National Squatters Front, Nepal has stated that it has drawn serious attention to the government's decision to vacate the unorganized and squatter settlements in Kathmandu. The Morcha issued a statement on Friday, objecting to recent reports that security forces are preparing to evacuate squatter settlements, stating that such a move would be unconstitutional and inhumane. Similarly, Amnesty International

has urged the government to stop the eviction of squatter settlements.
