The issue of taking Durga Prasai under control was discussed in the security committee meeting convened by Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal on Sunday.
In a meeting called to discuss the integrated security plan targeting the elections, the heads of the security agencies had said that Prasain's statements should be taken seriously. The security chiefs said that his statements were inciting violence and should be brought under the purview of action. In particular, the security apparatus had taken seriously his recent statements saying that 'they can detonate bombs in the embassy and blame them on themselves' and that the country would come to a standstill. In the meeting, Nepal Police Chief IGP Dan Bahadur Karki, Armed Police Force Chief Raju Aryal and National Investigation Department Chief Tekendra Karki analyzed that his statements were creating an atmosphere of fear in the society.
After the meeting, it was also decided to take strict legal action to eliminate those who incite violence and terrorize the people without mentioning Prasain's name. ‘Although the name was not mentioned in the decision of the meeting, it was a decision made targeting Durga Prasain’s statement,’ says an official of the ministry.
A few days ago, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, while talking to journalists, had also said that he took the statements of people including Prasain seriously. Durga Prasain, who identifies himself as the coordinator of the Nation, Nationality, Religion, and Culture Protection Campaign, had publicly announced that he would intensify the agitation from 7 Mangsir. After he announced the agitation, the home administration had even called him for discussions. A group including Madhav Khatiwada had reached the ministry on behalf of Prasain and submitted a 26-point demand letter. And, he had promised that the agitation would be peaceful.
However, after Prasain continuously made provocative statements, the police arrested him from his residence in Bhaktapur at midnight on Monday. Amid tight security, a team from the Valley Police Office and the District Police Complex, Kathmandu took him into custody. He had been claiming that he would arrest him himself until Monday afternoon. He is currently being held in the custody of the District Police Complex, Bhadrakali. It has not been decided on which charges he will be charged with. A police officer said that he will be produced in court on Tuesday after consulting with the government attorney for an extension of his remand.
