The hospital will take over the responsibility of raising and educating the children of a woman who died during childbirth at KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital. After the death of 34-year-old Minashree Rai of Tuwachung Municipality-9, Khotang, on Friday, the family had protested and even vandalized the hospital, accusing the hospital of negligence.
After a discussion between the security forces, the hospital and the deceased's family at the District Administration Office, Lalitpur, the hospital agreed to support the nine-year-old eldest daughter and the newborn's upbringing and education, and the relatives of the deceased decided not to protest and to accept the body, said Lalitpur District Police Range Chief SSP Hobindra Bogati. The hospital said that Rai died due to excessive bleeding after giving birth, but the relatives protested carrying placards saying that the woman died due to the negligence of the doctors. On Monday, the relatives of the deceased broke the gate of the hospital and started protesting, and the police fired 24 rounds of tear gas and baton charge to control the crowd in the hospital area. The angry crowd even pelted stones at the hospital. A discussion was held with the CDO, hospital administration and relatives of the deceased. A large number of security personnel were deployed in the hospital area after Rai's death. According to the deceased's cousin Chitra Rai, her sister had reached KIST Hospital on a scooter at the time given by the doctor. 'My sister, who had been getting regular check-ups at KIST Hospital, had come to deliver as per the doctor's advice,' Rai said. 'The doctor used his hands to pull out the baby and the bleeding increased. Despite two operations to stop the bleeding, my sister died.' Rai claims that a doctor he was doing an internship with had performed a normal delivery on his sister for learning purposes without consulting him. He alleges that senior doctors were not present during the operation and that his sister was used as a laboratory. Rai also said that the hospital had admitted its mistake during the discussion. The family demanded that the hospital provide insurance facilities to secure the future of the children along with their upbringing and education. The family will receive the body of the deceased after a postmortem tomorrow.
