The government has decided to ban more than a dozen social networks including Facebook and X. The ministerial decision held on Thursday at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has decided to close social networks, including Facebook, which are not listed in Nepal, from today.

Communication Minister Prithvisubba Gurung said that the decision was taken to close the social networks that have not been contacted after they did not come even after setting a deadline for listing. Minister Gurung also said that he has instructed the Government of Nepal Telecommunications Authority to deactivate and reactivate those social networks in Nepal from the same moment. He informed that the instructions will be implemented from Thursday and registration will be open from the same day.

According to the Minister of Communication Gurung, the Ministry of Communication had studied how many social networks are operating in Nepal. According to him, Meta is the biggest company running in Nepal. Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and Thread are running under Meta.  Minister Gurung says that even though it does not cost a single penny for the listing, strict action has been taken against those who do it.

This is what Minister Gurung said

I would like to publicize the notification of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology regarding managing the use of social media. The full bench of the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice, has given a directive order to the Government of Nepal in the contempt of court case number 2080 CF 00112 to make online and social media platforms of domestic and foreign origin mandatory to be listed in the relevant authorities before operation .

According to the decision made by the Government of Nepal Council of Ministers dated 2082/5/9, in accordance with the decision of the Government of Nepal on 2082/5/9, any person, company or organization interested in operating a social media platform in Nepal should submit an application to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology in accordance with the Directive 2080 for managing the use of social media issued by the Government of Nepal, by attaching the prescribed documents in the format specified in Schedule 1 of the same directive, within seven days, and when applying for the listing, the interested person, company or organization shall have a point of contact within Nepal, to listen to complaints. Everyone is aware of the fact that the Government of Nepal has instructed the Telecommunication Authority to deactivate the following social networks within Nepal that do not come to be contacted for listing within the specified time frame and to reactivate them from the same moment if they come to be listed. Effective from today . Registration is open from the day of arrival.
