Kaligandaki concern at Devghat

Devghatdham is famous for Makarsnan. Millions of devotees come here to bathe at the confluence of the Trishuli River and the Kaligandaki, following the religious belief that even the gods come to take a bath on the day of Maghe Sankranti.

Recently, due to the increase in various activities in the Kaligandaki river, there has been an increase in concern that the importance of the Dham will no longer be due to its effects.

What is currently happening in the Kaligandaki river area, if it does not stop, not only Devghatdham but the entire Kaligandaki river will be in danger and it will affect the settlements and other dhams under the cover of this river as well, the speaker of the program held at Devghat on Wednesday said. The campaigners involved in the campaign to save Kaligand and saints from the ashrams of Devghat area participated in the program.

They were of the opinion that the Kaligandaki River is under threat due to the uncontrollable mining of ballast, stone sand and increasing pollution in the river area as well as the federal government's plan to divert the Kaligandaki to Tinau. The discussion meeting of Kaligand organized by Mahesh Sannyas Ashram Ramanand Anushandhan Kendra of Devghatdham has also issued a five point 'Gandaki Manifesto'.  In the

manifesto, it is mentioned that a campaign will be conducted to establish the sacred Kaligandaki river as a cultural heritage of Hindu traditions around the world and as the national river of Nepal. In the same way, commitment has been expressed to protect the natural form of Kaligandaki and continuous clean flow. It is mentioned to oppose the human encroachment and exploitation that disrupts the availability of Shaligram in the lower coastal areas.

It is also mentioned in the manifesto to conduct a campaign for the elimination of pollution, garbage and excreta in the womb area of Gandaki and to promote religious tourism by promoting the rare importance and beauty of Kaligandaki under the leadership of saints. The consensus of the speakers was that the protection of the natural form of Kaligandaki and the continuous clean flow is the current hot topic.

Kulraj Chalise, who has been studying the issue of Kaligandaki for a long time, opined that diverting the water of Kaligandaki to another place is like theft. It was said that if the government stops the campaign within the country, then they have the position to internationalize this issue. He urged that the saints should play a role in bringing the importance of Kaligandaki to the public.

The diversion of Kaligand will disrupt the food security of 130,000 hectares of the lower coastal area, he said that there will be no water for bathing in the river bank or for washing the cremation embers.

The federal government has introduced a plan for the diversion of Kaligand in the policy and program and budget of 2071. There is a plan to build a nine meter diameter tunnel to connect Kaligandi to Tinau from Pipaldanda. Besides irrigation in Rupandehi and Kapilvastu, this project to produce 132 megawatts of electricity is not believable in itself,” Chalise said. He said that compared to the cost of the plan, the benefits it provides are very less.

RK Adipta Giri, who is involved in the protection of Kaligandaki, said that since there is a big game against Kaligandaki, a big campaign is also necessary to protect it. Rather than protection, the state system is used for exploitation. On the coast of Kaligand there are more than one and a half hundred big khale crushers. Exploitation is uncontrolled. Natural flow of water  There is a plan to stop it, a big campaign has to be launched against it," said Giri. Rachna Bhattarai, who is involved in the

tourism campaign, suggested to start earning through tourism, not by exploiting the resources of Kaligandaki, but by explaining its religious significance.

Ramchandra Baral said that this river has benefited 13 lakh 22 thousand 538 population of 288 thousand 527 households in 35 municipalities. Jagannath Regmi, another presenter of the paper, said that since the Puranas call Devghat Adi Prayag, activities and plans should not be made to harm the religious beliefs of Kaligandaki.
