President Ramchandra Paudel has called upon the world community to take care that the security of the mountains is the security of the earth. At the 29th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-29) in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, President Paudel drew the attention of the world community by presenting Nepal's agenda.

"Let's all take care that the protection of the mountains is the protection of the earth, the world should not forget that the process of turning the white mountains into black mountains will not only lead to the crisis in those countries, but also to the low-lying coastal countries," he said He also proposed to make a subject in COP-29. President Paudel also informed the world community that Nepal is going to conduct the Everest dialogue program based on this concept. 

The president made it clear that he came to the conference with a voice for climate justice and reparations. "The large resources spent on ammunition should be used to protect human civilization while minimizing the negative effects of climate change."

He said that the earth is in crisis due to climate change. He made it clear that especially poor, underdeveloped, developing and small island countries are more affected by its pain. "Nepal is going through a paradoxical situation of having negligible carbon emissions but having to suffer extensive negative effects," he said. 

He said that Nepal is still suffering from climatic disasters. President Paudel mentioned that hundreds of people have died and material damage of billions has been caused by the recent floods, landslides and snow explosions and the recovery and restoration has not yet been done. 

'For the benefit of the world community and the protection of the earth, Nepal is implementing an ambitious NDC plan to reduce carbon emissions while maintaining discipline in the use of natural resources, increasing the forest area, emphasizing clean energy production and supply and many other efforts have been made,' he said. said.  As compared to the

efforts, the impact of climate change is more extensive, so there are many challenges and it is clear that Nepal's capacity to deal with it is not enough. "For climate adaptation and emission reduction, we have had to cut the budget allocated for poverty alleviation. This has made us more unjust. For this, the principle that polluters should pay compensation for pollution should be applied in practice, as well as reducing emissions," said President Poudel.  He complained that the amount announced in the climate finance fund was insufficient and even the announced amount could not be collected. "It is a sad matter that the amount collected is not easily accessible to the target community due to the complicated process," he said. 

He also called for the speedy operation of the Loss-Loss Fund, which was established to give to developing countries that are at risk of climate. "I want to emphasize on the evaluation and payment of the contribution of countries like Nepal that contribute to the protection of mountains, clean water and biological diversity," he said. President Paudele emphasized that it would be appropriate to run the program through climate finance as a grant through state funds. "According to the binding provisions of the Paris Agreement and the commitment of developed countries, sufficient grant funds should be provided for technology transfer and capacity development," he said. 

He said that new common quantitative goals of climate finance should be determined based on climate justice, equity and capacity. He expressed his belief that the conference will make a firm commitment to limit the increase in the average temperature of the earth to 1.5 degrees Celsius and to ensure climate justice and sustainable development for mountainous and underdeveloped countries. 

In that session, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev welcomed all the participants in Baku. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and other heads of state and government of different countries in the world addressed and urged everyone to invest in the field of climate change.

President Poudel has met with his Maldives counterpart, Dr. Mohammad Muiju, who arrived in Baku to participate in COP-29. During the meeting, President Paudel said that since countries like Nepal and Maldives are affected by climate change, they should strengthen bilateral cooperation on this issue and cooperate in climate talks. "Both of our countries are affected by climate change, so I think that we should strengthen bilateral cooperation and cooperate in climate negotiations and make joint efforts for financial and technical support for countries like ours," said President Paudel's press advisor Kiran Pokharel in the interview. informed.

President Paudel said that as founding members of South Asian Regional Cooperation Organization (SAARC), Nepal and Maldives are playing an important role in the development of regional cooperation in South Asia. He mentioned that Nepal is trying to advance the activities of SAARC and expects the cooperation of all member countries.

Mentioning that there is a need to expand the communication network between Kathmandu and Male and that the tourists visiting Nepal from the Maldives can gain unique experiences here, President Paudel said that the Himalayas of Nepal and the beautiful islands of the Maldives can be promoted with packages for tourist destinations in order to help the economic development of both countries. expressed an opinion.

'Nepal is an excellent destination for foreign investment, we have established a one-stop service center by making laws to facilitate foreign investment, it has sectors such as hydropower, tourism, infrastructure and information technology and agriculture,' said President Paudel.

Nepal and Maldives established diplomatic relations on 1 August 1980. In the meeting, the President of Maldives Dr. Mohammad Muizu said that Maldives is ready to work together with Nepal and the world to reduce the effects of climate change. Similarly, Forest and Environment Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, who arrived in Baku to participate in the conference, said that due to global temperature increase, the threat of snow melting in high mountains and glaciers exploding continues.

Minister Shahi made this statement on behalf of Nepal at the meeting of environment ministers of Hindu Kesh Himalayan region organized by Bhutan government on COP-29. On that occasion, he also said that it has been revealed from past events that a mountain nation like Nepal is experiencing both loss and damage due to climate change.
