Shubshankar Kandel, president of Nepal Media Society, has said that arresting Kailash Sirohia, president of Kantipur Publications Limited, in a terrorist style is not normal.
He said that with the action of the home administration on Tuesday, the government is heading towards the path of authoritarianism and autocracy. In a country with a democratic system, the media, bar association and human rights organizations are considered to be a safe zone as they are responsible for civil rights and expression, saying that it was scandalous to arrest them from the working room while they were working on Tuesday. He said that all the media should unite and protest against it.
He also said that President Sirohia was arrested to seek revenge based on the fact that Home Minister Ravi Lamichhane had printed the news. Speaking at a press conference held at the central office of Kantipur Publications on Wednesday, he said that all citizens should have the same rules and laws. He gave the example of General Secretary of Federal Parliament Padma Prasad Pandey and said that Pandey also has dual citizenship and the citizenship number was changed but he corrected it. He said, 'Many citizens may have dual citizenship numbers. But he was not arrested when the Secretary General had two citizenship numbers in the Federal Parliament. But Sirohia was arrested. Citizens living in the same country on the same charges, do you think the laws are different? '
He said that no one should be exempted from the law if he had made a mistake and Sirohia would not be exempted if he had made a mistake. But Home Minister Lamichhane said that he had deliberately arrested Sirohia. He said, 'There is a way to investigate any complaint . After receiving a complaint, can he be arrested while working in a media house without being called for investigation?'
He said that Home Minister Lamichhane was upset when the news started coming out about him and that he tried to attack the media. But he mentioned that the media will not stop in this way. He said, 'We took away my job (the post of home minister) by writing about citizenship first. Want to eat again? The Minister of Home Affairs expressed his anger.'
He said yesterday's arrest gave the impression that censorship had begun on the media. He said, 'This is now going towards violating the legal values established by the government.'
He said that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal should also take up yesterday's incident. He says that the government is going to shut the mouth of the media. Stating that confusion has been spread towards the media, he urged the media people to take action according to the prescribed punishment if they are found to have committed a crime. He explained, 'Many have felt it . Shouldn't Sirohia be arrested? Shouldn't it? Found . But there is a process of arresting and investigating . In this case of citizenship, an arrest warrant should have been issued and taken away. Don't be confused about this. Ask us questions too . Action will be taken according to the prevailing law.'
