Munamaya waits for her daughter in Samba Chowk

What you should know

What could be bigger than a football field for Samba? What could be more fun than turning the hooting of millions of fans into power and defeating your opponent in a game? Sometimes standing on that big field creates contradictions within Samba.

Enjoying the game or worrying about uncertainty? He is disturbed by his own thoughts. The mother who taught Savitra Bhandari to walk step by step by standing on the field of life, the same mother Munamaya Bhandari, who was carving sorrow to make Samba, was once in the hospital bed while her daughter's sports exam was going on.

This is the story of how Gokulam won the Indian Women's League title in 2022-23. Samba did not compromise with defeat despite being in the same rapatap. She scored 31 goals in 10 games. Before the start of the season, the mother was suffering from a stomach ache. Samba's anxiety lines began to grow as her mother's illness worsened. Samba asked her sister to take her mother to Pokhara hospital from her home in Lamjung. Mother has stones. It had to be operated on.

Those days are still etched in Samba's mind. While Samba was praying for her mother's recovery from the field, the mother was praying for her daughter's victory from the hospital. "Mummy's operation in the morning on the day of the final, my match in the afternoon. How difficult was it for me?' Samba remembers. Samba gave her best performance on the field. The match is over. Everyone started to 'celebrate' the victory. Samba called her mother while waiting for the 'celebration'. The supporters of Gokulam were shouting happily, 'Samba, O! Samba.'

While talking to mother, hands came to congratulate Samba. Samba shook hands and began to understand Munamaya's movements on the phone. "I'm fine, don't worry," Samba got the joy of winning the game only after her mother gave her a health update. Samba also told me that she had won her match with joy. Mother was overjoyed. Someone's camera captured that moment with mom. Later, many words of praise were poured in by Samba fans on social media.

Samba is a strong pillar in Nepal's women's football history. Having scored 64 goals in 60 matches for the Nepali national team, she is the "hero" of the Samba field. For Samba well-wishers, his great goals are the inspiration of life. It is a matter of pride, not only in Nepal, but in South Asia, she is the famous women's football player. Among the fans, not only the game of samba, but also the fearless nature and unique hair style are discussed.

Samba, spread over a wide area, remembers its roots every day. In any geography, she stood up by playing ball of socks. That village has given him the most beautiful gift of life. Samba Sandar is seen standing at Khudi Bazar Chowk located in Marsyangdi Rural Municipality-9. The village council has given a new name to the square where his statue is erected - Samba Chok. Samba feels like a dream when he reaches the square and looks at his own statue. "There is still work to be done, there is a lot of responsibility," Samba thinks. Remembering him, many young people make tiktoks and reels at that square. He smiles in the photo. One day mother Munamaya and father Tham Bahadur also took photos in the same square like others.

Munamayamaya remembers her daughter while she is flying the wings of success. Pratima reaches forward and puffs out her chest with pride. The villagers say, 'This is the same daughter, who used to collect socks from all over the village as a child. She used to make a ball of socks and play with her brothers.' Samba remembers that too, 'Whenever we used to steal dried socks and hide them. And we used to make a ball and go out to play.'' The mother was worried, 'Will she spoil her studies?' Samba slowly started showing her magic in the game. That magic started to haunt the mother as well. And she began to find her happiness in her daughter's victories.

Samba went home only about a month ago. By going home, Munamaya's wait of 2 years was over. "I used to talk on video calls, but for 2 years I kept saying that I would come. This time I went," Samba recounts. Munamaya made new dishes for her daughter. She is familiar with her daughter's tastes. When Samba reached home, not only his mother and family were waiting, but the whole village was waiting. As soon as they arrived, some people wanted to take photos, some people wanted to make tiktoks. "Even till 12 o'clock in the night there was a rush of visitors," said Samba. On the other hand, the mother was waiting to get some time off and share her heart with her daughter. When Samba reaches home, she sees a different look on her mother's face. "That glow was filled with joy that I came," says Samba.

Munamaya waits for her daughter in Samba Chowk Samba goes home to stay with her mother but time is divided. A week was spent being a guest at events and being honored. They also call their mother for respect. What would make Munamaya more proud to be honored as Samba's mother? "It feels good to be respected by a person who stands up for himself," says Samba emotionally, remembering her mother's broad chest.

Mother gets a chance during dinner in the evening. What she is trying to tell her daughter. At that moment, the mother says, "How much will you play now?" don't play Relax.' When her daughter lifts the trophy, she is not only happy, but the mother is very afraid of the injuries that will continue while playing. She regretfully says, 'Why did you have to play even with such an injury?' But where does she give the samba game a break so soon? A new history is yet to be made. You have to earn money by playing. To strengthen the financial condition of the house. Samba's dream is to build a good house and keep his mother happy.

'You don't stop playing for that,' Samba tries to explain. Mother is not at home, she wants to see that Samba is not hurt. However, the mother's attention is more focused on fighting and being pushed by someone than the achievements of the game. That is enough to hurt the mother. Sometimes if Samba doesn't call, mom loses her appetite. She called her sister and asked, 'Why didn't Savitri's phone call?' Mother did not watch the samba game live. He also has a great desire to see.

Before, when there was a match in the stadium, both parents wanted to come. But how to leave home both? One or the other had to keep the desire. Brother did the shooting. Bale won the shootout. Father Tham Bahadur came to the stadium and watched his daughter play. Munamaya was sad. She complained to her eldest daughter, "I took my husband and I didn't take her." Samba wants to take her mother to watch the next match. This time, on her way home, Samba joined the field planting. She remembered the old days when she used to spend time with her father. Aalima enjoyed the memories of eating while sitting in the garden.

A week passed in the blink of an eye for Munamaya. The night before her daughter's return, some sadness covered her. On the day of her return, she said to her daughter, "Play well." I will come home as soon as the holiday is over.' At that time, Samba remembered the moment when he came to Kathmandu for the first time after being selected in APF. On the day of going to Kathmandu, Munamaya's eyes were filled with tears. She came halfway to take her daughter, wiping her tears. Samba did not cry in front of her mother, but after she said goodbye, she reached the bus station crying. He used to walk wiping his tears thinking that people would see him on the road and ask him why he was crying. The more I would cry, the more tears would come,' recalls Samba.

Savitra became Samba after coming to APF. "Senior sisters kept samba saying the name Savitra Bhandari is long," she recalls. Samba, who came to Kathmandu for the first time in 2014, joined the national team that year. Two months of APF training was not easy for him. But after 2 months, the shape of the samba player became stronger.

Samba was born in 2053. When Munamaya gave birth to Samba, there was a society that hoped for a son. Mother was pressured by grandmother. I got a son, you got a daughter? We need a son,'' Munamaya would later tell her grandmother's stern words to her children. When her sister was born after Samba, the mother became even more neglected. Munamaya got a daughter again, said the neighbor with a frown, Munamaya was jealous. She answered them in an angry expression, 'There is a river near the house, Faldeo.' Munamaya did many things as if she did not hear.

Ba never discriminated between children. Later, even after the birth of the brother, mother and child never differed. Samba did not see him as less than a son. Didi worked inside the house, Samba outside the house. She used to do the work that was assigned to men like plowing the fields, wearing aali, and doing bows.

Munamaya waits for her daughter in Samba Chowk Samba was 12 years old. In the village, it was a custom to cut down the khasi after cutting Kuvindo during Dasain. Neighboring brothers called Samba to cut Kuvindo. But where did the uncles and boys of the village give? They started blocking. Samba was unstoppable. The brothers urged, “Cut Miley Kat.” Samba picked up the khukuri and cut Kuvindo and ran away. Next year, not Kuvindo, the brothers encouraged to cut Khasi. It was a society that lived on the belief that killing a daughter would bring disaster. The brothers said, "Cut Miley, cut." A voice came from the other side, "No. Nakat.' But Samba picked up the khukuri, got the job done at once. After that she became known as a fearless daughter.

Samba was so fearless, if there was a fight, she would beat up her older brothers. Samba's mother used to hold her hand when she was overcome by this. Samba used to bring medals not only in football, but also in volleyball and athletics. She used to bring home medals along with money. And she used to give it to her mother. Samba's childhood dream was to become an army. When she joined the APF for football, everyone in the village talked about, 'Miley got a job in the police.' When her mother blessed her when she was little, she always said, 'Be a big person.' She didn't know what she would do. He felt that society should be changed no matter what. Later she said, "If I become an army, I will grow up and change." they love Samba slowly understood the meaning of being big. The mother wanted her daughter to get a government job. After getting a job in the APF, that dream of the mother also came true.

Looking back at Samba, everything seems like a dream. Yesterday she played football with bare feet, no jersey and socks, now she has become an international player. Now, seeing him, the village of Samba has changed its face in the game. Today's generations get to play football with jerseys and boots. The family's emphasis is also on their love of football. Schools have started holding various competitions. Samba is shocked to see this. But there is no stopping Samba. There is more to do. So that I can also contribute to Nepali football. I can make my mother more proud by seeing that,' says Samba adamantly.
