Drama 'Sick Room': Endless pain, destinationless relationship

Two very different characters! However, the injury is the same. The same injuries and scars in them lead Kalina and Diwas to the 'sick room'. These two who met at the intersection of forgetting pain and suffering continue to collide with the same pain, continuously! 'Sick room' is a room where patients come to rest. This room reserved for patients is also a waiting room for healing wounds and injuries!

Teenage Kalina (Nuru Khanal) and Diwas (Abhishek Khadka) first meet in 'Sick Room'. Here they both talk about each other's wounds. The scars on the wound show Nishanka. And, they empathize and sympathize with each other's pain.

Kalina reaches the sick room of the school with stomach ache. Lampsar lies down on one of the two beds placed there. Stomach hums . Sometimes she jumps on the bed when she is in pain and sometimes she becomes limp  ! At the same time, the teenager with bloodied knees and hands enters the room . There is also a cut mark just below the eye. Kalina asks Diwas why he came to the 'sick room' after reaching there. Kalina asks again, 'Does it hurt ?' . 

In the play 'Sick Room' staged at 'Kathaghera Theatre', director Akanksha Karki has touched a serious subject through these subtle words. In this Nepali adaptation of Rajiv Joseph's play 'Gruesm Playground Injuries', complex love relationships, human complexity, weakness and softness are presented by these two characters.

is at the heart of the drama, self-harm. The relationship between Kalina and Diwas is complicated in the play. He is not the best friend, nor the ideal lover . However, as many times as they are found, they are found because of the same wound . That is, most of the meetings between the two are either in the hospital, or in the sick room . While meeting for a long time, a deep friendship is seen between them . The two are accepting their love for each other somewhere.

But these two live in different worlds. Even love takes different paths. However, they continue to show the same care and love for each other . Through the complex relationship between the two, the play shows the different dimensions of love. They openly show each other's weaknesses and problems. They complain about the wounds they have made, and try to share their pain. 

Both Kalina and Diwas are hurting themselves . Sometimes Kalina cuts her thigh with a knife, sometimes Diwas climbs an electric pole. But why are these two hurting themselves? 'Sick Room' doesn't give a very strong reason . Diwas wants to be close to Kalina through that injury.

Divas believes that as soon as Kalina touches the injury, she will heal . So they stay close to Kalina hoping to heal their injuries. But, isn't it because of his love for Diwas Kalina that he is repeatedly coming to her with injuries? Due to which conflict, Kalina is bleeding herself ? If the

play had opened more on the internal conflict of the two characters, the play's debate on psychology, tension and complexity would have been broader. However, while raising this story, director Akanksha has repeatedly asked those who are living amid childhood stress, life's complications and pain, 'Does the wound hurt?' This question is courage, motivation and enthusiasm to live life. Even 'painkiller' to forget the pain, injury and wound! Does anyone 'hurt ?' It is a great relief to sympathize. 

This play has a funny style that keeps the audience hooked. That is, the use of 'non-linear' style in the play! For example, sometimes Kalina and Diwas appear in their teenage form on the stage and sometimes in their young avatar. Curiosity, new experiences, first experiences are scenes that enliven adolescence.

Most of the time in this scene Kalina and Diwas are very curious about new usage. Most of the subjects of love, sex and the future are found in it . However, in the scenes of youth, relationships, life experiences and realizations are at the center . Also, it contains beautiful stories of their past and memories.

This style of director Akanksha is very beautiful to present the ups and downs of the life of these two on one stage. In one scene, Divas and Kalina's past and present are put on the same stage and those characters are included . When Diwas of the present (Sudam Sike) questions and answers Kalina of the past (Noor Khanal), Kalina of the present (Akanksha Karki) communicates with Divas of the past (Abhishek Khadka). This kind of use on the stage makes 'Sick Room' a new use for the audience among the traditional narrative style. 

When the same sequence is repeated, the drama seems long . Most of the time Divas and Kalina meet in sick room, hospital. The same incidents from teenagers to young adults have made the drama Lambetan . If some of the repetitive scenes were removed, the story of 'Sick Room' would have been more interesting and accurate.

Director Karki introduced two strong talents through this drama. Abhishek Khadka has succeeded in creating a wide space for himself in the world of acting by bringing Diwas's wild nature, curiosity and gentle nature to the stage. Similarly, Nuru Khanal also introduced herself through Kalina. To witness the mature acting of Sudam and Akanksha, watch 'Sick Room'.  The use of dialogue in the

drama has been used in a very skillful manner. Kalina and Divas are often mixing English words and speaking . It does not mean that the play is in English language . However, the drama has caught the language corresponding to the class of the story. The artist speaks in Nepali and English language according to the time and situation. Kishor, the use of some 'slang' spoken by Kishori keeps the audience laughing .

Similarly, the set design reflects the art of Ghanshyam Shrestha. Use in the play There is an endless use of painting on sets. This drawing of straight lines does not seem to be the end of calligraphy. It speaks of Kalina and Divas' endless pain and relationship. Their relationship never finds a destination . Masina props sometimes made the stage look like a hospital and sometimes like their personal room! 

In particular, 'sick room' talks about such a safe place (safe space), where pain can be expressed . One can openly cry in pain. Where someone who listens to the pain and suffering gets close . For Kalina and Diwas, each other is that safe place . Every time they are in pain, even after years they appear in front of each other . They often ask each other, 'Does it hurt?' Perhaps, the very presence of the one who hears the pain is the salve that heals the wound.
