Footage of the horrific murder of a Nepali family in an apartment in Mantua, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA, at 5:15 a.m. on Monday, February 24, has been released. The Fairfax County Police Department released the footage, captured on a body camera worn by police officers who were deployed to the scene 24 days after the incident, to American media on March 19, local time.
Chhatra Thapa, 54, a resident of Ward No. 9 of Belka Municipality in Udayapur district, murdered his 51-year-old wife Binda Thapa and 31-year-old daughter Mamta Thapa on February 24. He killed his wife and daughter with a 10-inch sharp weapon (dau) when the police arrived. The police captured the incident on a body camera. During the incident, Chhatra killed his wife Binda and daughter Mamta, and when his son-in-law Santosh Basnet tried to stop him, he was also stabbed.
The footage captured by the police's body camera shows the apartment room covered in blood. In the footage released by the police, Chhatra is seen kneeling and holding the knife in an attempt to kill his son-in-law Santosh after killing his wife Binda and daughter Mamta. After the police repeatedly asked him to surrender, he refused and tried to attack him again. After a police officer repeatedly shot the murder suspect Chhatra, killing him on the spot.
When the police reached the spot, the daughter Mamta was already dead. Wife Binda was screaming in pain. The woman living in the next room had informed the police while the incident was happening. The woman is heard calling 911 in the call recording released by the police along with the footage, saying that there was a loud noise coming from her room and that something serious had happened.
Santosh and Mamta's 1-year-old son was inside the apartment room during the incident. Police rescued the child safely from the bloody room. The child was being kept at a child care center. Santosh's son-in-law is currently receiving treatment. Fairfax Police Department Chief Kevin Davis, addressing the scene of the incident, said that if the police had been delayed for some time, Santosh could have died. He also confirmed that the child was safe. Davis responded that he was forced to shoot Chhatra, who was confirmed as a murder suspect on the spot after repeatedly disobeying police orders.
This is the second incident in a Nepali family in America in a year. Earlier, in August last year, a Nepali man in Dallas, Texas, shot and killed his wife and son before committing suicide. Lalit Pradhan, 53, shot and killed his 37-year-old wife Ranjana Shrestha and three-year-old son Pranish Pradhan. Police said that after shooting his wife and son, Lalit shot himself using the same pistol and committed suicide.
