Four umbrella organizations of the banking and financial sector have strongly condemned the deadly attack on the employees of Jyoti Bikas Bank.
On Monday, the Nepal Bankers Association, Development Bankers Association Nepal, Nepal Financial Institutions Association and Nepal Microfinance Bankers Association issued a joint statement, expressing their serious concern over the activity.
The statement described the attack on the bank employee during the loan recovery as an 'inhuman and criminal' act. The bank employee was attacked last Thursday by the operators of 'Saptakoshi Integrated Agro Firm Pvt. Ltd.', a borrower of Jyoti Bikash Bank's Rupani branch.
On November 24, the employees of the bank's Bardibas regional office were called to discuss the issue of regularizing the loan installments. The statement states that the agro firm's director and his associates took control of the employees and systematically abused and assaulted them.
In a joint statement, banking sector leaders have expressed serious dissatisfaction with the role of the local police administration. The associations have called it 'extremely regrettable' and a 'serious weakness' of the security agencies, saying that even when the incident was reported to the relevant agency on the day of the incident, it was not immediately addressed and that a complaint had not been registered even when the statement was issued. The statement said, 'It is regrettable that such criminals should be brought to justice in a timely manner and strict action should be taken, and that an investigation should be carried out as soon as the information is received, but no complaint has been registered.'
The associations have concluded that such chaotic activities have added challenges to the delivery of banking services while banks and financial institutions adopt regular procedures to protect depositors' savings and recover loans.
All four organizations have strongly demanded that the government immediately arrest the culprits and take strictest action to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future and to keep the morale of the employees high.
