Due to the deterioration of the BP highway, the number of guests in the hotel-resort decreased

Since the Quality Beach Resort at Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-5, Mulkot came into operation, there was usually a crowd of guests on Fridays and Saturdays. Sometimes, the resort owner had to cancel the booking as the rooms were not available. But on October 11 and 12, the resort was inundated by the floods in Sunkoshi. The furniture on the ground floor and the room were damaged.

After four and a half months, it came into operation from last January 25. Hotel owners and staff worked hard to restore the resort to its original state. According to the resort operators, more than 100 million has been invested to bring it back to the previous state. The number of guests coming to stay at the resort, which has been put into operation with such hard work, has decreased.

Now there is not much activity in the resort like before. The reason is that the flood did not only wash away the resort, it also washed away about 12 km of BP highway from Kathmandu to the resort. Rajesh Shrestha, the owner and management in charge of the resort, says that it is sad that even after 8 months of the flood, the highway is not sustainable. "With everyone's efforts, we were able to bring the resort back to its original state," he said, "The condition of the highway is the same, because of the road itself, guests are not allowed to come."

The number of guests has decreased by 60 percent compared to before. "There is no problem in the resort, in all aspects we have returned to the previous situation," said Shrestha, "the number of visitors would also increase if the BP highway is built quickly." He said that the government should be serious about the sustainable construction of the highway as the livelihoods of many areas are connected to it. Initially, this resort was operational from Chait 2, 2078.

The initial investment in the resort now spread over an area of 25 ropanis is 300 million rupees.

The resort on the Sunkoshi coast has been attracting everyone while going up and down from Mulkot to the capital Kathmandu via the BP highway. More than two dozen hotels, resorts and restaurants are operating in Mulkot area.

After the construction of the BP highway, Rashmi Basnet of Kathmandu made a plan to operate a hotel considering the short distance to the capital. And, in collaboration with Hotel Pauwa in Bardiwas, she started a hotel in Mulkot under the same name. But Pauwa did not support him later. The structure of the resort was built by investing more than 25 million. It was going well. But the flood that occurred in Sunkoshi in October ended his dream.

Basnet says that reconstruction has started again in collaboration with Pauwa Hotel. She complained that although the work to prepare Pauwa Hotel and Resort had started by the first week of June, the condition of the road added to her concern. "Crillions of investments have sunk, we are adding more investments," she said, "the condition of the road is not likely to raise investment, because after the hotel is built, it is the only way for guests to come, what will happen when the road is closed?" "There is a situation where businessmen collect taxes but no one supports and understands," said Basnet, "not only our livelihood is connected with the road, the livelihood of many people is connected, the issues of easy travel are connected, even now, if the government body does not become serious, there is no option to leave the business."

Manoj Shrestha, a hotelier from Mulkot, also managed to return the business to the rhythm by investing crores in the sunken hotel. "Since there is a short distance road connecting the capital, the hotel would be full of travelers and tourists going to and from the eastern plains and hills," he said, "Now that the road is not sustainable, there is no option to imagine such a thing."

Shrestha, the owner of Unique Hotel and Resort, has cleaned the flooded resort and put it into operation. "The business was running very well before the flood," he says, "now we have come to provide better service than before, we have forgotten the suffering after the flood and now we are waiting for the guests." Even though the road is difficult, he said that the guests are coming in spades.

Mulkot has 5 hotels and resorts with swimming pools. The flood did not only submerge highways and market shops. Pashupati Basic School, a little below the resort, also got submerged. But the parents and teachers united and brought the school back to its former state.  Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-5 Ward President Surath Bahadur Bassel, who is also a hotelier in Mulkot, said that the highway should be built soon. "Everyone said that the highway will be built and spent a lot of money to bring the resort to its original condition," he said, "but even though the hotel-resort is in operation, the road is still in a bad condition, the government did not delay in building the road."

Due to the deterioration of the BP highway, the number of guests in the hotel-resort decreased

The chief district officer of Sindhuli, Leela Prasad Sharma, said that because hoteliers and others have been calling him daily and asking him to build the BP highway so that it can run smoothly even in dry weather, the concerned authorities are getting attention. "The body to be told has not made any arrangements," he said.

Due to the BP highway, the number of vehicles passing through this section has also decreased. Earlier, more than 7,000 vehicles used to travel through this highway. Now only around 4000 vehicles are running. Passengers are afraid to walk through this road when it rains. Due to the highway itself, the number of electric vehicles passing through this section is decreasing. Now the BP highway has been constructed by digging up the river for the rainy season and covering it with gravel and big stones.
