It has been 22 years since Balkrishna Thapalia of Bhandara started teaching at Kandeshwari Basic School in Rapti Municipality-13, Kanda. So far the road has not reached Kanda. The village within the municipality is still deprived of road infrastructure. Around 2059, he reached Kanda as a teacher. At that time, walking from home early would reach Kana late at night.
In the year 2066, the road track was started to connect from Bhandara in Chitwan to Malekhu in Dhading. In this year the road reached Thakaltar. We had to walk for another 6 hours to reach there by motorbike. Around the year 2072, the road reached Yehuralitar. From there we had to walk for four hours to reach Kanda again. In the year 2074, the track was opened and the road was brought to Kalitar, but walking is not an option to reach Kanda. Now the road has reached Bhajeura near Kalitar. From there, you can reach Kanda only after walking for two and a half hours. "Kanda has not yet been touched by road infrastructure," says Thapalia, "but it is much easier now than before."
Now he says that if he leaves home at 6 in the morning, he will reach school at 10 o'clock. "We had to walk from home the day before to go to the first school," he says. Now, the locals of the place where the road reaches are earning income by selling beans, pindalu, farsi, skus, yam. People who support their household expenses by growing vegetables are increasing. Chepang community is densely populated in this area.
Previously, a warehouse had to be used to carry products to Doko all day and sell them. The product was wasted if it did not reach the market on time. Now that's not a problem. "After reaching the road, the local people are active in income generation, they are attracted to agriculture," says Thapalia, "They are able to produce salt, oil and food grains." The produce here goes to Bhandara and Malekhu. After reaching the road, market shops are opened in the village. First, if you want to buy something, you have to go to Bhandara in Chitwan and Charaundi in Dhading.
The construction of the Bhandara-Malekhu Chepang road, which connects the East-West Highway and the Prithvi Highway, has not been able to gain momentum. The total distance of the road is 66 km. Landslides occur in various sections during monsoons and traffic is blocked. The road is 36 km towards Chitwan and 30 km towards Dhading. So far only 21 km has been paved in both sections. Ashok Kumar Chepang, Ward President of Rapti-13, said that even if the road is built, there will be no traffic during the dry season. "Only the road from Bhandara to Thakaltar is smooth," he says, "This road has been neglected by the Union government."
Narayan Prasad Lamichhane, Head of Road Division, Bharatpur, said that this route may be overshadowed even though it is an alternative road. "This road is unpaved in many places, it may not be a priority because alternative routes are being built recently," he said, "it can be upgraded if there is a budget, it will cost 3 billion rupees to make an alternative route." He says that This road has two lanes.
Bikas Gurung of Tolang, located in Ichchakamana rural municipality-2, says that after the construction of the Fisling-Shaktikhor road, connecting it with the Prithvi highway, it has become easier to move from village to city. "Because there was no road, we had to carry vegetables from village to village, it took us three hours to go on foot," he says, "now we can reach the market in an hour by car."
According to him, the road track was opened from 2065. Dode and Dhap are orange growing villages. In the beginning, since there was no road, the oranges were brought to the market here. "Now that the road has been built, oranges and vegetables have increased in the village," he said, "because of the road, the number of people earning financial income is increasing."
Amit Kumar Sharma, Assistant Spokesperson of the Roads Department, said that a pre-feasibility study is being conducted to build a 10 km tunnel from Mazhimtar in Dhading to Shaktikhor in Chitwan. "The Fisling-Shaktikhor road is 45 km, of which 8 km is graveled," he said, "with the help of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), 37 km has been paved under the rural road improvement project."
He told that there was a problem in some places and there was no black paper. "There is a problem in Kholsakholsi on the road," he said, "when the road is smooth, there is no problem to leave Shaktikhor in an hour and a half through Upardanggarhi, the old headquarters of Chitwan."
This is a one lane road. Some places have new tracks. He says that it is suitable for driving small vehicles on this road. This will save time and fuel. It can be used as an alternative route," he said. "The track was opened in the year 074/75." The road from Mowakhola, the border area of Dhading and Chitwan, connects to Banskot. He says that most of the work on this road has been completed.
According to Lamichhane, head of road division Bharatpur, the construction of four lane main and two lane service lane road from Gondrang to Pulchok within Bharatpur Metropolitan City has been completed 90 percent. He claims that the work will be completed within three months at the most. The bypass road has been expanded to four lanes. "According to the concept of creating a ring road in the metropolis, the Bharatpur metropolitan large ring road is going to be constructed," he said. In which most of the roads have been blackened.
'Sitamai temple leaves from Gondrang in Bharatpur, from there it comes to Pulchok via Patihani, Jagatpur, Meghauli Shivghat,' he says, 'It will come to Gondrang from Aamptari, its work has been completed more than 70 percent.' Chitwan starts from Makwanpur after crossing Lothar river of Chitwan and Northeast Highway.
Thori-Bharatpur-Muglin road is within the national highway. The road from Chitwan's Thimura via Devghat is being studied so that it can be connected to Gandakot. "Detailed Project Report (DPR) from Gaindakot to Thimura is being studied," said Amit Kumar Sharma, Assistant Spokesperson of the Roads Department, "which is 10 km long." It will be made into a two-lane road. "It is included in the alternative auxiliary highway," he said, "Later it can be connected from Gaindakot to Devghat-Thimura-Gaighat so that it can exit to Muglin."
A postal highway is being constructed to connect Thori from Bharatpur through Madi. Due to Chitwan Park, this road is being completed by revising the drawing. By changing the initial plan, a 16.5 km post road will be constructed from Bagai passing through the central area of the park to Thori by crossing the Kusum river and a 7.3 km postal highway will be constructed from the Riu river (Wankatta) and a new bridge will be constructed at the rapti of Dhruvaghat to Jagatpur. Similarly, the East-West Electric Railway will also touch Bharatpur. Almost all inner roads of Bharatpur metropolis are paved. Experts say that Chitwan is ahead in road infrastructure.
