Chitwan has made a good identity in healthcare and education. Chitwan, which is popular as a medical city, has the first university in the country's technical sector, the University of Agriculture and Forestry. Chitwan has a federal government hospital with grand infrastructure, two medical colleges and a teaching hospital, BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, which only treats cancer, and many other private hospitals.

After the opening of an agricultural campus in Rampur in the 1930s, Chitwan became a major destination for students from all over the country to study agriculture. The agricultural campus has now assumed the stature of a university. Students from all corners of the country continue to come here to study other technical subjects under the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT). With the start of systematic settlement development, Chitwan has taken a leap in this area.

Raptidun Development Officer Krishnabam Mall and Janaklal Sharma wrote in the book 'Rapti Valley' in 2014 that a 15-bed hospital, three health clinics and a maternity hospital are needed for Raptidun. Raptidun also included the western areas of present-day Chitwan and Makwanpur. 68 years ago with the concept of a 15-bed hospital, the current state of healthcare and infrastructure expansion is unimaginable. After Raptidun Development Project opened a health center in front of the current District Police Office, Dr. Hiranyadev Pradhan. At his request and efforts, a solid hospital building was built in Bharatpur with American help. In January 2020, the then King Mahendra inaugurated the hospital building with 25 beds.

Now this hospital has 600 beds with new buildings. It is a grand teaching hospital of Chitwan College of Medical Sciences (CMS/Purana Medical College) operated by Indians in 2055 by renting the land of the hospital. This teaching hospital is located in the west north corner of Bharatpur Hospital. There is an eye hospital operated by Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh on the land of Bharatpur Hospital parallel to CMS Teaching Hospital.

If you go west from Bharatpur Hospital, within 500 meters there is a teaching hospital of another medical college, Chitwan Medical College (CMC). BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, the country's main cancer treatment hospital, is located within three km from there. There are also many private hospitals around Bharatpur. First, he started a private hospital by renting old private houses in Bharatpur. Now private hospitals are also competing to provide services by building grand private buildings. Health infrastructure has expanded not only in Bharatpur region but also elsewhere.

Residents from Tikauli to the east were also forced to come to Bharatpur even if there was a common illness. Currently, the 100-bed Bakulahar Hospital of the provincial level in Ratnanagar is providing services including surgery. Ayurveda Hospital is also in Ratnanagar. All in all 4000 beds are available in Chitwan hospital. Equipment like MRI, City Scan are available from government hospitals, teaching hospitals and even private hospitals.

Till the 50s, the walls of Chitwan used to advertise the hospitals and doctors of Raxaul, India. Hospitals in Gorakhpur used to publish advertisements in local newspapers. Now patients from outside Chitwan come for treatment. The executive president of Chitwan Medical College, Dr. Harish Neupane says. He said that in a city like Kathmandu, it is difficult to manage patients during the time of Covid, but when it is necessary to manage oxygen, ICU and ventilators, Chitwan treated Covid easily.

At that time, a patient came to Chitwan for Covid treatment by helicopter. Because of the infrastructure, equipment and expert doctors, kidney and liver transplants were done in Chitwan. Joint transplants are also done in hospitals in Chitwan. But the situation is not without problems. Vijay Subedi, former chairman of Bharatpur Hospital Development Committee, says that despite good development in infrastructure and other areas in Chitwan, patients are not confident. Even though there are all kinds of infrastructure, how health workers treat patients is also important. Even for treatment in Chitwan, people do not go to Kathmandu, Delhi or other countries. Why did you go? It should be investigated,'' former president Subedi said. He has seen that the quality of treatment services will increase if the government agencies monitor it properly.

Health agencies have their own problems. Bharatpur Hospital, which started 6 decades ago with 25 beds, has now not only increased the number of beds, but has also received approval to become an official campus of the National Institute of Medical Sciences (NAMS). But hospitals have their own problems. The 600-bed hospital has got the government-sanctioned capacity of 300 beds. But only the posts equivalent to 150 beds have been filled. The situation in government hospitals is like this, but other private hospitals are also not without problems. After the introduction of the insurance policy, the number of patients in health institutions has increased. Accordingly, the former chairman of Bharatpur Hospital Development Committee, Vijay Subedi, says that the hospital should be ready to provide prompt and effective treatment services.

It is also suspected that Chitwan, which has completed its journey to university in the education sector, will not find it difficult to protect its past reputation. Birendra College was established as an Intermediate Art College in the year 2022 in the journey of education which flourished along with the Raptidun development project. Graduation classes started in this college from the year 2035. In the year 2029, an agricultural college came in Chitwan Rampur. V.No. Bachelor's degree in agriculture has been started since 2032. Apart from these two important Angic Colleges of Tribhuvan University, Balkumari College at Narayangadh, Saptagandaki College at Bharatpur and Commerce Campus at Ratnagar were opened as community colleges in the 1940s.

Agriculture and Forestry University has been established in Rampur as the first technical university of Nepal since June 3, 2067. The Rampur Agricultural Campus under Tribhuvan University has been converted into a university. It has been a long time since the university was established, but the matter of transfer of land in the name of Tribhuvan University has not been finalized yet. The engineering campus of Tribhuvan University has also come into operation within the same university premises. Chitwan has 339 community and 164 institutional schools providing education up to class 10. There are 85 educational institutions for 11th and 12th education. There are 45 educational institutions offering education from undergraduate to postgraduate. There are also around 30 educational institutions running CTEVT programs.

Since there is also a medical college, students come from India as well as from different districts of the country to study in Chitwan educational institution. Ramakant Sapkota, an educational personality of Chitwan, who has also worked as a consultant in the Ministry of Education, believes that Chitwan's educational level is good when compared to Kathmandu and other districts.

'But the situation has become like this, we have not only done well in the country. Chitwan students want to associate themselves with colleges abroad. Not only from Chitwan, the trend of going abroad for higher education has increased from all over the country. So we need to make our quality world-class,' said Sapkota.
