IVF is simply known as test tube baby. The process of conception begins with the union of a woman's egg and a man's sperm. IVF is the process of testing the egg and sperm of a man taken from a woman, keeping them in the laboratory for a few days, and then transferring the resulting embryo into the woman's uterus.

Various procedures are involved in IVF. It is not as easy to extract the egg from a woman as it is to extract the sperm from a man. For that an ovulation is in process. For a few days, the woman is given hormonal injections. We then collect fluids from the woman's ovaries through a 'transvaginal' method without any incisions. It contains eggs. It is then fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. There is also a different process to determine that. The end result of which is the fetus. We then transfer that embryo created in the lab into a woman.

When adopting the IVF method, two separate tests, genetic and genetic, can be performed. We do genetic tests specifically to determine if there is something wrong with the fetus. If one does all of these tests, or if multiple IVF attempts are not successful, genetic causes should also be studied. We look at its chromosomes and study genetics. This does not mean that the sex of the fetus cannot be seen. However, it is not viewed because it is illegal. The goal of IVF is to help the infertile to have a healthy baby and not to help choose the sex.

There is a lot of misconception that IVF results in twins. That is also wrong. The chance of having twins is about 15 percent. It also depends on the technical matter of how many embryos are transferred on which day. With age, it depends on the receptivity of the uterus, the quality of the egg and sperm.

In order for the success of IVF to be good, work should be done from quality assurance, quality control to counseling and keeping the laboratory tidy. For that only a full time embryologist is possible. One of the main problems for embryologists in Nepal is that of certification. Here there is also a big problem of who will be certified by which organization. Many skilled personnel have gone abroad due to lack of solution.

- Experts say that the problem of childlessness is increasing not only in Nepal, but all over the world. In this context, an edited part of the views expressed by Embryologist Bista at the health round table organized by Kantipur, focusing on the situation of childlessness in Nepal, the risks it may cause in the future, etc.
