The government has appointed economist Vishwa Paudel as the governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. The meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Tuesday appointed Poudel as the governor. Paudel, who was appointed as the governor, has completed his studies in economics from America. He was also the former vice-chairman of the National Planning Commission.
Recently, the economy and the financial sector are also in a difficult situation. The role of the governor is many to improve the overall economy. Yagya Banjade of Kantipur had a brief conversation with Vishwa Paudel on various issues regarding the appointment of the governor: After a long tussle between the parties in the government, the governor of Rashtra Bank has been appointed. What are the priorities of financial sector reform? First of all, I will enhance the supervisory capacity of the National Bank. I believe that there should be less rules and more supervision. There is a lot of confusion when there are too many rules. There are some problems in banks. These problems can be solved through effective supervision. My focus remains on this.
Rashtra Bank has become the governor from outside. There is a situation where you have to coordinate with those who are competing with you. How do you see it?
I don't think there was any competition for governor. It is not even that the governor was selected by applying. The government has given responsibility to whoever it sees fit. So I don't know who I was competing with. Even if it was a competition, it is over now. It is not always a competition. I don't bully anyone. I will move forward by including everyone. Until yesterday, Jo-Jo was an aspirant for the governorship, but now it is over. From tomorrow I am the guardian (leadership) of all. My activities will be accordingly.
Currently, the situation in the economy and financial sector is complicated. How have you taken this responsibility?
I am familiar with Rashtra Bank. Many of my students are working there. Even when I was in the Planning Commission, I was closely watching the National Bank. Therefore it I did not take it as a problem. The situation is difficult, but there is confidence that it will improve. It needs everyone's help.
You are closely watching the economy and the economic indicators of the country. What is your role in untangling the knots in the economy?
In the existing policies and regulations issued by the National Bank, there are some complaints not only from industrialists/businessmen but also from the private sector as a whole. In this regard, I will try to find a solution to the problem through dialogue, study and research. I'm not a hip shooter. It's an economy, if you make a common mistake, everyone gets hurt. Don't let that happen. What do you say at the end of the
?
Please remember two things about me during my five-year tenure. One is administration based on dialogue and the other is transparency.
