”I raised a family living on the roadside”

What you should know

My original home is Bardghat in Nawalparasi. Now I am 60 years old. It has been 22 years since I lived at this Baitadi Gothlapani road intersection. I raised my family in Bardghat by sitting on this road.

My daily life is to sit on the side of the road and sell herbs like vermilion and sandalwood. This has also become the source of my household expenses. I am fingerprint . Due to the situation at home, I could not study . As my father used to plow oxen in Sahuko, Sahu used to give us grains . From that, the father used to run the household.

I am the youngest of three brothers. From my childhood, I worked as a laborer in the construction of other people's houses. One day I saw a man in our village selling seeds in bags. He was not from our village . I didn't even ask his house where we are from. I just asked him how much he earns from this and from where he buys it .

After listening to him, I also wanted to go around the village and sell seeds instead of working. I went to the market with the few rupees I had saved from working and bought various types of vegetable seeds from a seed shop. As I was ashamed to sell in my own village, I started selling to neighboring villages . From this, good earnings started to be made. I used to sell only seasonal vegetable seeds .

When I went to the market to buy seeds, I saw a person like me selling herbs and not seeds. I approached him and asked him about the herbs he was carrying. Poor thing, what does he know that he is not a buyer but a person who steals my idea . I asked him everything from the place where he buys and sells to the cities and villages.

Thinking back home . It would be more beneficial to sell herbs along with seeds. From that second day, I also started the herbal business . I left Bardghat and headed west because I thought it would be better to trade herbs in the market rather than in the village. One year I sold herbs in Attaria bus park in Kailali and nearby villages . After coming here, I started selling herbs, seeds and all kinds of dyes (vermilion) . There is a good income from this . A lot of progress is nothing, it goes well until home expenses.

One year I also sold at Dadeldhura Bus Park . I came to Baitadi next year. Now I feel like my own home. I also go to the village over there to sell . A lot of Jatra (Fair) takes place here. Jatra is held eleven times in a year . I go to sell all these at the fair . For the rest of the day, I sit on the side of this road (gothalapani market square) and sell it. Eight to nine hundred are sold a day. On the day of selling in Jatra, one can earn from 1500 to 2000 in one day.

I have 6 daughters, a son and a wife . Daughters are all married. Since I have not read myself, I understand the importance of reading . So teach your children . Now the son studies in class 12 . I have built a house on half a plot of land in Bardghat . All this I have earned by selling these herbs and seeds .

I have ganan, maleti, dolu, kalonun, alum and kali narayan in herbs . The color is vermilion and sandalwood . There are different types of seeds. Many types of hiatus have been cured by taking these herbs. It is because of those people that I have been promoted . I am satisfied with my job . I can't rent a big shutter due to lack of finances . That's why I sat on one side of this square.

This umbrella has poured out from the sun. I have rented a room for overnight stay . You have to pay the rent - sometimes you have to. The people here are nice. So far they have not helped me. This herb that I sell works for injuries, gastics, stomachaches, colds and fevers. I also consider this work as a service.

I bring this herb from the Himalayan region of Darchula and the color from the Patna market in India. Didn't have to ask anyone . Even if it is small, business is done in cash . No borrowing. After the son earns money, he will surely say, "Father, you can't do business by collecting dust on the roadside!" Only then will I leave this business .
