I went to Kalapahad with my friends to earn money at the age of 14 after I was tired of raising my family by farming.
Kalimati Rural Municipality-5, Sand is my home. Childhood was spent in poverty. Since I was a child, I had seen my parents working as carpenters. When I saw that they were doing farming with sorrow, I felt that something should be done. I used to think the same since I was 5/6 years old. Therefore, I spent more time helping my parents in work than studying.
It was not possible for the family's financial situation to study above the primary level . In addition to farming, it became a chore to support a family of five/six people. After that, at the age of 14, I went to Kalapahad in India with my friends to earn.
Traveled around various cities in India in search of work. No matter where he went, he would find hard work. I could not earn as expected even though I forgot my sorrow. There was only sorrow in India . Stayed there for four/five years and came back.
I got married after returning home from Kalapahad. Added responsibility after marriage . I didn't study to get a job. Even if we do some ventures, there is lack of money . After not having any skills, I also adopted the agricultural profession . Even if you produce rice, corn, wheat on your own land, it is not enough to eat for more than 8 months.
Something has to be done to meet the expenses for four more months . After not having any skills, I bought a fishing net for 2000 . There I go fishing in the nearby Sarada river with a net. Now I have been collecting household expenses for my family by fishing.
Now I am 57 years old . I have a family of 6 . I do farming on 7/8 plantation land to raise family expenses. Due to the acidity in the soil, no matter how much effort is made, the grain is not produced as before. Regardless of the cold or heat, I leave the house in the morning with a net and go fishing . Fish don't always fall into the net . I return home disappointed on days when I don't catch fish . At such a time there is no option but to pray to God.
During the rainy season, many times life has been at risk while fishing. However, due to the responsibility of raising a family, I did not stop fishing . In the past, two/three kilos were collected by fishing from morning till evening. Due to the fact that the dozers and excavators of the construction companies used for the construction of the river have buried the lake with the stones and mud that fell during the construction of the road, the fish have died in Sharda.
Since we have stopped getting fish like before in Sharada, now it is difficult to kill half to one kilo by playing nets all day . In any case, I came here thinking that fishing is better than spending time at home all day. Now, 4/500 hands are caught daily by fishing . Even though I am unemployed, I have educated my children with the money I earned from fishing.
It has become easy to buy salt and oil with the money earned from fishing, and the expenses for buying other small items have been raised from this. If you get a job, you have neither education nor age. I can't even work as I used to because my age has cut my net. There is no other means of earning income than fishing. I fish like that . Sometimes people who come to visit from outside buy fish. I mostly sell fish to local buyers .
Earlier Sarada used to get good fish everywhere . One/two kilos of fish could be killed in two/three hours . Now one kilo of fish has to be hunted all day . This has caused some problems .
The concerned body has not been able to stop the gravel-sand mining using machines in the river. Not only that, fish are disappearing when the local level calls for tenders for gravel-sand mining in order to increase income. It is also sad to see the local level kicking the unemployed in the stomach.
