The third round of diplomatic talks between the US and Iran is scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, today.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Geneva from Tehran on Wednesday for the talks. There, he met with his Omani counterpart Badr Albusaidi.  Oman's Foreign Minister is mediating the talks between the two countries today. The second round of talks in Muscat, mediated by Oman, has already been held with the aim of reaching an agreement on Iran's nuclear program. The US has repeatedly called on Iran to reduce its uranium enrichment to zero, in addition to addressing Iran's ballistic missile program and supporting militant groups in the region.

US President Donald Trump has said that Iran will not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.  Iran has repeatedly said that nuclear weapons are not its choice but that it reserves the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. US President Trump, who has been pressuring Iran for a deal, has also deployed an aircraft carrier to the Middle East.

In response, Iran has conducted several rounds of military exercises in the country's southern region and near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf.
