United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern that the US military intervention in Venezuela violates international law.
Addressing the Security Council meeting on Monday, he stressed that compliance with international law is essential for international peace and security.
Guterres warned of the long-term impact of the incident, targeting the capture of ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores during a US military operation. 'I am deeply concerned about the instability this incident could cause in the country, the regional implications and the precedent it could set for future relations between different countries,' the Secretary-General said.
According to international media outlet CNN, Venezuela has been going through decades of internal instability, social and economic crises, and Guterres also recalled the fact that democracy there has been weakened and millions of people have been displaced. 'The current situation is very fragile, but it is still possible to avert a major and devastating conflict.'
Stressing the need to remain principled in such complex and confusing situations, he said that there are sufficient mechanisms in international law to address drug trafficking, natural resource disputes and human rights issues. 'This is the path we should follow,' he said.
