At least 26 people were killed in an attack by terrorists on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India on Tuesday. According to Dainik Bhaskar, one Nepali was also killed in the attack, although the Nepalese mission and the government have not confirmed it.

Pahalgam is about 90 km from Srinagar, which is a popular destination for tourists. Gunmen attacked tourists walking in the square known as Switzerland Park. The Indian media claims that 'The Resistance Front' (TRF) led by Hafiz Saeed, the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba, took responsibility for the attack.

The media has released the names of 16 of the dead, citing security officials, including Sudeep Neupane*, a Nepali, but no details. After the incident, Home Minister Amit Shah reached Kashmir.

The injured are being treated at a hospital in Anantnag. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called the incident "heartbreaking" and demanded that the federal government take responsibility. Indian government has been promoting Kashmir as a tourist center in recent years.

In 2024, about 3.5 million tourists visited Kashmir. In 2019, 40 security personnel were killed in the Pulwama attack. 36 Indian citizens were killed in the 2000 attack.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the barbaric attack on tourists a "brutal incident" and pledged to take strict action against the culprits.
