On this day (May 2) in 1997, Tony Blair was elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was elected Prime Minister, ending the 18-year rule of the Conservative Party. Blair also became the youngest politician to become Prime Minister of Britain since 1812.

In the British general election on May 1, 1997, Blair's Labor Party won with a majority of votes. Labor managed to get 418 seats in the 659-member parliament. This paved the way for Blair to become Prime Minister. Prime Minister John Major's Conservative Party was reduced to 165.
